ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Nominations are out for the 3rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards.
Joining me is a familiar music face for us here, Tracy St. George, D.J. for Q100 Radio here in Atlanta.
Thanks for being with us.
TRACY ST. GEORGE, Q100 ATLANTA D.J.: Thank you.
COOPER: It's the first time we're meeting.
ST. GEORGE: Yes, it is.
COOPER: You're wearing incredible pants. I wish the audience could see them.
ST. GEORGE: Thank you. They are pretty cool. But thank you so much.
COOPER: So...
ST. GEORGE: Was the weather guy trying to pick you up?
COOPER: No, I don't think he was trying to pick me up.
ST. GEORGE: OK.
COOPER: So Latin music, it's...
ST. GEORGE: Yes. The nominations were yesterday. They told the nominees,...
COOPER: Right.
ST. GEORGE: ... and it's going to be, actually, September 18.
COOPER: Now Latin music has really taken off since Ricky Martin kind of...
ST. GEORGE: Yes.
COOPER: ... shook his thing at the Grammy's.
ST. GEORGE: Yes, which I like to see. Didn't mind that at all.
But we got so many new people coming. We've got Shakira, who of course you know.
COOPER: Right.
ST. GEORGE: Right.
COOPER: Sure. Well, yes. She, in fact, was dating, I think though, the son of the president of Argentina or something.
ST. GEORGE: Really?
COOPER: I think so, yes. I read that somewhere.
ST. GEORGE: Did not know that. Very interesting.
COOPER: Well,...
ST. GEORGE: Did you know...
COOPER: Sure.
ST. GEORGE: ... her -- the name means "woman full of grace" in Arabic?
COOPER: Really?
ST. GEORGE: Yes, it does. I think it means woman full of roots. She needs to go to the hair salon. She's got a really bad hairdo.
COOPER: Oh does she?
ST. GEORGE: Yes.
COOPER: I saw her perform on "Saturday Night Live." She's quite a...
ST. GEORGE: She's great.
COOPER: ... handful. Yes.
ST. GEORGE: Yes, definitely known for her exotic outfits, the real extravagant outfits and her belly dancing.
COOPER: I'm a little sick of that song though, the I E I E I (ph) song you know.
ST. GEORGE: Right. She does kind of yodel a little bit...
COOPER: Yes.
ST. GEORGE: ... plays the pan flute...
COOPER: Right.
ST. GEORGE: ... and a little bit of an accordion.
COOPER: Like dance (ph) here, she plays the pan flute.
ST. GEORGE: Right.
COOPER: I didn't know that.
ST. GEORGE: Right, exactly. She's very talented in ways you just don't know.
COOPER: OK.
ST. GEORGE: But other people nominated, Marc Anthony for best salsa album, who was Guinness Book of World Records best selling salsa artist ever.
COOPER: Really.
ST. GEORGE: Yes. So that's pretty cool.
Celia Cruz, have you ever seen her?
COOPER: I have not.
ST. GEORGE: She's -- they call her the Queen of Salsa. And she's kind of like the Queen of Soul.
COOPER: OK.
ST. GEORGE: She's like our Aretha Franklin. She's about that old. Really -- there she is.
COOPER: OK.
ST. GEORGE: She's a wild woman.
COOPER: That's cool. I like -- I like her.
Now Enrique Iglesias was not nominated.
ST. GEORGE: Yes. No, he wasn't, but he's huge here so I don't...
COOPER: Right.
ST. GEORGE: ... know how that happens. But he might not have had a Spanish album this year or something.
COOPER: Right.
ST. GEORGE: So...
COOPER: Because now a lot of these artists are recording -- I mean Shakira is recording both...
ST. GEORGE: Right. COOPER: ... in Spanish and doing an English crossover album.
ST. GEORGE: Exactly. I think with the Shakira album, I think she does have some Spanish and some English songs. So I think that was kind of the crossover where she could be nominated over there and over here.
COOPER: Now who are the best new artists? Are there -- is there -- you know?
ST. GEORGE: That I don't know.
COOPER: OK.
ST. GEORGE: But I do know that -- let's see, who can we talk about? Luis Miguel, have you ever heard of him?
COOPER: Sure, of course, he's...
ST. GEORGE: He huge over there. Hopefully...
COOPER: And he's always wearing like tuxedos and he's always looking very...
ST. GEORGE: And he's a hot Latin man. Yes, and he used to be dating Mariah Carey.
COOPER: I did not know this.
ST. GEORGE: And this is...
COOPER: You are a fountain of information.
ST. GEORGE: I really am. I'm a fountain.
He began his singing career at 11.
COOPER: Right.
ST. GEORGE: He was at a birthday party singing a song and there was a Mexican record executive there and signed him.
COOPER: Wow!
ST. George: Just from singing like "Happy Birthday" or pin the tail on the donkey.
COOPER: Now Shakira's career really took off when she performed I think at the first Latin Grammy's.
ST. GEORGE: Right. And she also had the "MTV Unplugged," which really put her on the top.
COOPER: Cool.
ST. GEORGE: Yes. COOPER: What else -- do we know who's going to perform at the (UNINTELLIGIBLE)?
ST. GEORGE: I don't think it's been announced yet. But like Celia Cruz, the lady -- the really wild woman, she was nominated for I think five or six so I'm sure she'll be performing. I'm sure we'll have some Marc Anthony, too.
COOPER: Who's your favorite Latin artist?
ST. GEORGE: Ricky Martin.
COOPER: Really?
ST. GEORGE: Love Ricky Martin, yes.
COOPER: You know he's going to be living in the new AOL Time Warner building in New York?
ST. GEORGE: Is it -- oh, not in Atlanta?
COOPER: No.
ST. GEORGE: OK, well I might be moving to New York very soon. Yes.
COOPER: Have you ever met Ricky Martin and...
ST. GEORGE: No.
COOPER: ... (UNINTELLIGIBLE).
ST. GEORGE: No wait, I did. I take that back. Yes, I did.
COOPER: All right.
ST. GEORGE: And he actually kissed my friend on the cheek.
COOPER: Really?
ST. GEORGE: It was her birthday. It was not mine. I was going to lie, but I thought I better not do that.
COOPER: Now there was a Colombian folk singer Carlos Vives -- Vivis...
ST. GEORGE: Oh Vives.
COOPER: ... who got six nominations.
ST. GEORGE: Yes, and he is good looking, too. I think his...
COOPER: This used to be...
ST. GEORGE: They're all hot these Latin men.
COOPER: This used to be a theme with you.
ST. GEORGE: Well when you think of Latin music, I think why it's going to be really popular over here because when you hear the Latin music you think fun, sexy, steamy vacation. So I think a lot of that stuff is really going to be coming over here very soon. And Carlos, actually he began his recording career in '82 -- '86, rather. He withdrew over there on the billboard charts in '99 and 2000 so we can only hope he comes over here.
COOPER: Wow!
ST. GEORGE: Good looking man.
COOPER: I want to watch the Latin Grammy's with you.
ST. GEORGE: OK.
COOPER: I think that would be fun.
ST. GEORGE: All right, it's a date. September 18, I'll pencil you in.
COOPER: Thanks.
ST. GEORGE: Thanks.
COOPER: Thanks for joining us this morning.
ST. GEORGE: Thank you.
