ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Joining us now on the phone is our Washington deputy bureau chief, Steve Redisch, for a look at what's going to happen in Washington today.

Good morning -- Steve.

STEVE REDISCH, CNN WASHINGTON DEPUTY BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning, Anderson.

Just another yet hot day here in the nation's capital, more hot air.

COOPER: More hot air. So where is the hot air today, besides outside?

REDISCH: Well, not to combine both, but President Bush actually gets out of town. He goes down to Charleston today, South Carolina, to talk more about welfare reform, and yet, more on his domestic agenda. He also has a fund-raising lunch for the governor -- gubernatorial candidate, the Republican gubernatorial candidate down in South Carolina.

COOPER: And what about Capitol Hill? What's going on there today?

REDISCH: Capitol Hill is quiet for the most part. Congress did most of its work last week. The Senate in is. The House is on recess until after the Labor Day holiday. The senators are doing some business. Later this week, we're going to hear from Senator Biden on Iraq.

And today, the White House and Capitol Hill have combined on a briefing for top business executives on the new Homeland Defense Department, basically telling them what's in the budget, what they're going to be looking for as far as contracts are concerned, and these top executives are there for a -- basically a cash -- you know, this is going to be a cash rap today.

COOPER: What else is going on today? Is there anything else we should know about in Washington?

REDISCH: They are going to start eradicating the anthrax at the Brentwood Post Office facility. This is the big post office facility that they found lots of anthrax. Two people had died in connection with the Brentwood facility. They are going to start pumping in some chlorine dioxide today and some test equipment just to see if this poisonous gas can kill the anthrax. And if it works, we'll know in about 7 to 10 days. They'll pump the rest of the building filled with the poisonous gas later this month -- or I'm sorry, later next month. And hopefully that will reopen the facility later.

COOPER: All right. Well, Steve, I appreciate you joining us this morning. I hope you get to stay indoors. It's going to be I think Chad said 99 degrees in Washington today, but with the running garbage, it's going to feel like 105. So thanks for joining us.

REDISCH: Talk to you tomorrow.

COOPER: All right.
