DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Police in Chicago are trying to sort out the details of a grisly scene on the city's south side, two men beaten to death by an angry mob after their van hit a group of people on foot.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: All I heard was a screech, because I live all the way upstairs, and then I came out, and there was a this.

STACEY DUBIN, WBBM REPORTER (ph): And this was the result at 40th and Lake Park, a van plows on to a porch, crushing portions of it, and in its path, three females are hit. But witnesses say they appeared coherent.

JULIA MITCHELL, EYEWITNESS: It was several more people actually standing there, and they were able to run, and the ones that were hit wasn't able to get away because the truck came so far.

DUBIN (ph): But if only that was the worst of it. After the crash, neighbors say a crowd converges on the van, attacking the van's driver and passengers.

MARY WILLIAMS, WITNESS: It was horrifying. It was sick.

DUBIN (ph) (on camera): How many people were beating these men?

WILLIAMS: I couldn't tell you. It was so many. It was so many guys, jumping in there.

DUBIN (ph): Like a crowd.

WILLIAMS: A crowd of guys.

DUBIN (ph): What were they beating the men with?

WILLIAMS: Fists, bricks.

DUBIN (ph): A brick remains near the scene. Police are still sorting out the story of a mob-type beating.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Either they attempted to get out of the car and were accosted by some of the witnesses. But we're still working on that information now.

DUBIN (ph): In the meantime, one person was taken away in police custody.
