FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: A California couple waiting to sink their teeth into a juicy steak hot off the grill had to call the cops instead. They say a neighbor stole their steak. No kidding. Ethan Harp with affiliate KCRA has this sizzling story.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is just unbelievable.

ETHAN HARP, KCRA CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): You're looking at exhibit A.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's like my meat is gone.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DISPATCHER: Sheriff's department dispatch.

KATHERINE KING, STEAK STOLEN: I need to make a complaint, please.

DISPATCHER: OK. What kind of complaint?

KING: This is going to sound totally crazy, but we just put a very expensive piece of meat on the barbecue and the people upstairs stole it off the barbecue. I swear to God. There's a barbecue sauce trail all the way up their stairs.

DISPATCHER: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

C.W. HULBERT, MEAT STOLEN: I came out to check, and it was gone, and I went back in the house and like, did I put that meat on there?

KING: My boyfriend came in and said, honey, somebody stole our tri-tip, and I came out here, and he lifted the top and it was all smoke from the juices, and no tri-tip.

HARP: They ruled out a wild animal because the lid was put back on. Then they look toward the stairwell.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I was (UNINTELLIGIBLE) report of a theft, I followed the drippings, and on the door handle there was also some grease and meat, marinade residue.

HARP: He also found 19-year-old Lindsey Blackledge. The woman who lives there says Blackledge was trying to heat the meat.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It was still hot when the officer came in.

HARP: Then stashed it under a bathroom sink.

LINDSEY BLACKLEDGE, ARRESTED: It's funny when you think why I'm in jail, stole a piece of meat.

HARP: Accused of knowingly possessing the taken tri-tip, she says someone else actually borrowed the beef.

BLACKLEDGE: No, I didn't name (ph) any names.

KING: Stealing is stealing. That was a $14 tri-tip roast.

HARP: For the family that had to settle for take-out, justice is a dish best served hot.

(on camera): What's the lesson here?

KING: Don't touch our meat.

HARP (voice-over): In San Andreas, Ethan Harp, KCRA 3 report.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

WHITFIELD: All right. A new spin on where's the beef.
