Aired August 17, 2002 - 07:55   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Men are taking it off and we mean hair. On -- in some cases, almost all of it, right? Janine Sharell has more on this.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JANINE SHARELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): In "Minority Report," Tom Cruise does for buzz cuts what he once did for Ray Bans in "Risky Business." Start a fashion frenzy.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE HAIR STYLIST: We're going to make you look like Tom Cruise.

FREDERIC FEKKAI, STYLIST: There's a big trend going on right now on shorter hair.

SHARELL: Stylist Frederic Fekkai counts Renee Zellweger and Kirsten Dunst among his clients. From tony Beverly Hills salons to trendy barber shops, men are taking it off. Taking it all off. When men decide to lop of their locks, their reasons for doing so are often as varied as the clients themselves.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE STYLIST: A lot times, it's pressure from their family or for a job.

FEKKAI: When we change our life, we change our look.

SHARELL: Why do you want to get your hair cut today?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Mainly pressure from girls.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE STYLIST: Honestly, there's not a whole lot of long hair left, other than, usually, artists and musicians, I would say. Or, sometimes bums, I guess.

(MUSIC)

SHARELL: Actually, even musicians such as Hootie & The Blowfish front man Darius Rucker are making bold, bald moves.

DARIUS RUCKER, LEAD SINGER, HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH: It was receding a little bit, not receding -- it was just, you know -- I was getting a cul de sac a little bit, you know.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Look at me; do I look like a fan of law enforcement?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SHARELL: "XXX" star Vin Diesel is on a personal mission to beat mother nature to the punch.

VIN DIESEL, ACTOR: I'm going to tell you something you may not know. But, there are parts of my head that are thinner than other parts of my hair and you can shave your head when it's time, or you can shave your head before it's time. And I shaved my head before it's time.

SHARRELL: "Minority Report" co-star Colin Farrell took it off for Daredevil, his next movie. Ditto Matthew McConaughey for "Reign of Fire."

MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY, ACTOR: The greatest haircut in the world. You wake up in the morning, you've got a washcloth and instead of just doing your face, you do the whole thing and you're ready to go. It's beautiful.

SHARREL: But it can be a brazen move.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I've seen people cry when they leave from here, up here, you know. And you just got to have to -- men aren't so bad. They're tough.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If I start crying, please don't film that.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It'll grow back.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Aren't you the guy from "Minority Report?"

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: No. I don't have his paycheck.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, man.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Haircuts are more than just a haircut, but it's about an attitude that and a look, a style.

Well, thank you.

SHARELL: Janine Sharell, CNN, Hollywood.
