KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: This week and next, CNN, and our colleagues at Time-Life, are looking at the "Faces of Ground Zero," the people whose lives were changed forever by the horrors of September 11.
Longtime photographer Joe McNally compiled their stories in a book and photo exhibit, and today he introduces us to Katrina Marino.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JOE MCNALLY, PHOTOGRAPHER: People would talk. They wanted to tell their own stories. They wanted to share.

Katrina Marino was photographed, along with her kids, Kristen and Tyler. She lost her husband, Kenny, who was with Rescue 1.

KATRINO MARINO, 9/11 WIDOW: He loved firefighting, and ever since we met over eight years ago, that was his love. To move up the ranks and to get into Rescue 1 in Manhattan was just amazing to him. I know he was very proud of that fact that he got to the top of his field.

He was a hero. That's what I tell my children. He's a special daddy. He helped all of the other daddies go home to their children.

MCNALLY: She has tried to use that sense of loss, that void in her life to maintain a sense of normalcy, obviously for her kids, but also to try to help other people, to be an inspiration to other people.

MARINO: The pay issue for the firemen, it's always kind of shocked me. These guys are risking their lives every single day, and they love the job, and so, they take it. And my husband never complained, because he loved the job.
