CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Bruce Springsteen, Guns 'n Roses, Michael Jackson were among the up-and-coming artists at this year's MTV Video Music Awards in New York. Wow! The big winner, who also drew big boos on stage, rapper Eminem.
This morning, we're going to get a lowdown on all of the big winners, and so much more, from our own Kendis Gibson, who got to attend the awards in New York.

Good morning.

KENDIS GIBSON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, and, Carol, what a show it was.

As you mentioned, one of the winners getting booed on stage. You had rockers who were fighting on stage, as in Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth, making it known that they don't really care for each other. And of course, you had the aging artists, who also made it on stage, as you mentioned, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Axl Rose, for that matter. Just, you might say, a typical year at the VMAs.

COSTELLO: Axl Rose, I actually caught a glimpse of him, and he looks exactly the same as he did, like, 20 years ago.

GIBSON: Who, Axl Rose?

COSTELLO: Axl Rose.

GIBSON: That's plenty of plastic surgery and makeup.

COSTELLO: I know, but he still had the long hair and the bandana and the whole bit. Hey...

GIBSON: Yes, he -- go ahead.

COSTELLO: I just wanted you to get into this Eminem thing, because viewers have been e-mailing us, and they claim that Moby said something bad about Eminem from the audience. And that's when Eminem said something nasty about Moby, and that's when the audience started booing.

GIBSON: It started a little bit earlier, because there was a bit involving Comic Dog and the Dog was trying to get at Eminem about some comments he had made about Moby.

But here's a quick look back at last night's events.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GIBSON (voice-over): From the performances to the surprise guests to Jimmy Fallon's comedic interludes...

JIMMY FALLON, MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS HOST: Hey, Michael Jackson looks great for 44, doesn't he?

(CHEERING)

FALLON: Between you and me, I think he's had some work done.

GIBSON: ... the 19th Annual MTV VMA stuck with the network's edgy awards tradition.

Rapper Eminem proved controversial, even in victory. He confronted rival, Moby, while accepting one of his four moonmen.

EMINEM, RAPPER: Keep booing, little girl. I will hit a man with glasses.

GIBSON: Ja Rule has ruled the radio and TV airwaves, and did so as well as the awards.

JA RULE, RAPPER: Oh, hey, hey, yes, yes, this is always a new edition to the family here, Mr. Moonman.

GIBSON: Well, besides the awards, the show was filled with the usual parade of pop princes and princesses. Britney Spears says this will be her last public appearance before her much-needed vacation.

BRITNEY SPEARS, SINGER: I'm so looking forward to this time off. I cannot even believe I have taken (ph) time off right now. It's like, to wake up in the morning and not have to worry about your hair and makeup, and it's just cool. It's really cool.

GIBSON: The performances bordered on the scantily dressed to the downright near naked.

But singer Shakira says, she wanted people to remember a little more than just her swiveling hips tonight.

SHAKIRA, SINGER: Last year, trying to convince everybody that my name was not Shaquira (ph), but Shakira you know. I think many things have changed since then.

GIBSON: Justin Timberlake made his solo performance debut, and this was introduced as Guns 'n Roses, but included no original member, except Axl Rose.

The awards, though, took on a more solemn tone with tributes to September 11 victims, through this performance by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and a tearful tribute to TLC member, Lisa Lopez.

(END VIDEOTAPE) GIBSON: Other awards, back to the awards, of course, Eminem won the Video of the Year award, took home four overall. Pink won two awards, as well as No Doubt taking home two.

So those were the big winners from last night -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Kendis, tell us more about Michael Jackson's award.

GIBSON: The award that wasn't necessarily an award? That one?

COSTELLO: Yes, what was that?

GIBSON: Well, it was presented as a birthday cake, and Britney just said, you know, The Artist of the Millennium. And there she goes -- she says, the Artist of the Millennium, the main (ph) production. And he took it to mean that it was an actual award, you know, being Michael Jackson and being as humble as he is. He gave an acceptance speech and all of that.

So you know, it's not clear whether it really was an award, but MTV is saying that they don't really have an Artist of the Millennium award, and we're not sure that they would give it to someone whose new album in the millennium didn't even make more than $1 million in sales. So...

COSTELLO: Ooh, ouch!

GIBSON: Ouch, I'm sorry, OK.

COSTELLO: OK, ouch, ouch. OK, Kendis, thank you very much for filling us in.
