(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Interesting. Eminem.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

JACK CAFFERTY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Interesting outfit, too.

It's always a scene, you know what I'm saying? Eminem is, I guess the big winner at last night's MTV Video Music Awards here in the city. The evening had some controversy. It usually does. A busy night for the censors. It always is. But it also had its more reverent momentous.

Kendis Gibson was there and he's here now and I can't wait.

KENDIS GIBSON, ENTERTAINMENT REPORTER: I'll tell you, only at the MTV Music Awards do you have where the winner gets booed.

CAFFERTY: Right.

GIBSON: Eminem got booed big time.

CAFFERTY: Right. But he was being obnoxious.

GIBSON: He was being obnoxious. He got a little push by Moby. But, you know, you had the winner get booed last night. You had rockers who were fighting, Sammy Hagar as well as David Lee Roth. They hate each other and it was clear on set. And you also had some aging rockers who were on stage and kind of showing their age.

CAFFERTY: For example?

GIBSON: For example, Michael Jackson, as well as Axl Rose, although he looked the same, he wasn't necessarily, you know, acting, showing his age.

CAFFERTY: The Michael Jackson thing I read in the newspapers this morning was wicked.

GIBSON: Yes.

CAFFERTY: Who was the kid from "SNL" who made the vicious comment about...

GIBSON: Yes, Jimmy Fallon from "SNL." In fact, we have a look back at the whole night's events. CAFFERTY: OK.

GIBSON: Take a look.

CAFFERTY: All right.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GIBSON (voice-over): From the performances to the surprise guests to Jimmy Fallon's comedic interludes...

JIMMY FALLON: And Michael Jackson looks great for 44, doesn't he? Between you and me, I think he's had some work done.

GIBSON: The 19th Annual MTV Video Music Awards stuck with the network's edgy awards tradition. Rapper Eminem proved controversial even in victory. He confronted rival Moby while accepting one of his four Moonmen.

EMINEM: Keep on booing, little girl. I will hit a man with glasses.

GIBSON: Ja Rule has ruled the radio and TV airwaves and did so, as well, at the awards.

JA RULE: Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. This is always a new addition to the family here. Mr. Moonman.

GIBSON: Well, besides the awards, the show was filled with the usual parade of pop princes and princesses.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Thank you so much.

GIBSON: Britney Spears says this will be her last public appearance before her much needed vacation.

BRITNEY SPEARS: So I'm looking forward to this time off. I cannot even believe I have time off right now. It's like, to wake up in the morning and not have to worry about your hair and makeup and it's just cool. It's really cool.

GIBSON: The performances bordered on the scantily dressed to the downright near naked.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I'm sorry momma, I never meant to hurt you.

GIBSON: Latin singer Shakira says she wanted people to remember a little more than just her swiveling hips tonight.

SHAKIRA: Last year trying to convince everybody that my name was not Shaquira, but Shakira, you know? So I think many things have changed since then.

GIBSON: Justin Timberlake made his solo performance debut. And this was introduced as Guns & Roses, but included no original member except Axl Rose. The awards, though, took on a more solemn tone with tributes to September 11 victims through this performance by Bruce Springsteen and the East Street Band and a tearful tribute to TLC member Lisa Lopez.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

GIBSON: Lisa, back to the awards, I should say, Eminem took home some four awards. Pink took home two and no doubt took home two, as well, Jack. So those were the big winners of the night.

CAFFERTY: And you've got more for us as the morning moves forward?

GIBSON: We're going to have some more on Britney Spears and this much needed vacation that she's taking.

CAFFERTY: There's another Michael Jackson anecdote that we'll save for later, too, about the birthday cake.

GIBSON: The artist of the millennium.

CAFFERTY: Or not.

GIBSON: In his own mind.

CAFFERTY: Kendis Gibson.
