CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: On the phone with us now, our Washington deputy bureau chief, Steve Redisch, with a look at what's going on there in Washington.
Good morning -- Steve.

STEVE REDISCH, CNN WASHINGTON DEPUTY BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning, Catherine.

CALLAWAY: It's Labor Day, and we are laboring, but President Bush is also not taking the day off. What's on his agenda today?

REDISCH: He's back from vacation.

CALLAWAY: All right.

REDISCH: He got back last night, and he's going promptly out again up to Pittsburgh and will spend Labor Day with union workers at a carpenters' picnic in one of the Pittsburgh suburbs.

CALLAWAY: And we just heard from Secretary Powell just a minute ago. Now, he is headed to Africa now, right?

REDISCH: He is on his way to Africa. This is the second week of what's called the Worldwide Sustainable Development Conference in Johannesburg.

CALLAWAY: Right.

REDISCH: Most of the world leaders were there last week. Secretary Powell is representing the United States, and will deliver a speech and will talk about U.S. goals to make people -- to make countries law-abiding and to strengthen their laws as one way to protect international trade.

CALLAWAY: Hey, Steve, do you think we're going to see a change in Congress when they come back in this week with sort of back to work and elections right around the corner now?

REDISCH: They'll be back tomorrow, and I'll give you a little tease for tomorrow. We'll talk about one of the biggest bandwagons that Congress is going to get on, at least for the next couple of months. They are going to try and get onto the "Amber Alert" bandwagon tomorrow.

CALLAWAY: Oh, really?

REDISCH: And we'll talk more about that tomorrow.

CALLAWAY: Oh, that's interesting. That's what we call a tease in this business.

All right, Steve Redisch, thanks for getting up with us this morning.
