KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A breaking news story we continue to follow for you, and that is according to the Secret Service, a car seized in Washington D.C. this afternoon contained 10 rifles and 6 handguns. The couple in that car has now been taken into custody.
Why they were driving that car with those weapons, we're not sure. That's why we're turning to Jeanne Meserve. She is live in D.C. with more on this.

Jeanne -- what do you know?

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Kyra, law enforcement sources are now identifying the man they are detaining as Jeffrey Clotier (ph). He was not known to the Secret Service prior to this incident, meaning he had made no prior threats against the president of the United States.

He is currently in detention. He is being questioned by the Uniformed Division of the U.S. Secret Service. He is being questioned about what they found in his vehicle.

What they found were 10 rifles and 6 handguns. In addition, Clotier (ph) had ammunition, rifle ammunition on his person when he was detained.

Clotier (ph), according to law enforcement sources, had made threats against the president of the United States. Unclear exactly what the nature of those threats were. One law enforcement saying, however, that it had something to do with -- quote "The implant the CIA put in his brain."

The Secret Service issued an alert for this individual and for this vehicle, a white Chevy Cavalier, earlier this morning. According to officers here on the scene, local residents here in Washington heard news reports, spotted the car, called authorities. They gave chase, but lost them.

The Secret Service then did spot the vehicle, pulled it aside. He was taken out of the vehicle without incident and arrested. Also detained was a woman who was in that vehicle with him.

A search of the very cluttered car turned up, as I mentioned, the 10 rifles and 6 handguns. There were no explosives found. Handguns laws here in the District of Columbia are very strict. Amongst the charges he could be facing, felony charges of carrying an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition.

Back to you -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right, our Jeanne Meserve there in Adams Morgan in Washington D.C. -- thanks, Jeanne.
