CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: That brings us to "The Talk of CNN" where we find out what the hot topics are in your neighborhood.
Let's check in with "The Dave Ryan in the Morning Show," 101.3 KDWB Minneapolis St. Paul.

DAVE RYAN, "THE DAVE RYAN IN THE MORNING SHOW," 101.3 KDWB: Good morning, Carol.

ANGI TAYLOR, "THE DAVE RYAN IN THE MORNING SHOW," 101.3 KDWB: Hey.

COSTELLO: Do we have to talk about "American Idol" some more?

TAYLOR: We can.

RYAN: Well, you know what, we can't get enough of this show. I was -- I was in a restaurant last night, Carol, and I was trying to watch the show along with about two-thirds of the restaurant and the rest of the other people there weren't interested. And so we were turning the TV up and they would talk louder, and so we'd turn the TV up a little bit more and they'd talk louder. And it became a big battle because we're all trying to watch this. So you know what I did, I'm so into this show, Carol, I went home and I T (ph) voted so I watched it twice last night.

COSTELLO: Now that's disgusting.

RYAN: How's that for pathetic?

COSTELLO: That is pathetic. You need to get a life, Dave.

RYAN: I know.

TAYLOR: You're not really into it, are you, Carol?

COSTELLO: Well, you know I watch it occasionally and I think it's quite entertaining. I mean it's such a clever idea that's really caught on, how can you really slam it too much?

TAYLOR: That's true. I was watching your co-workers there on CNN yesterday like making their odds -- betting their odds yesterday and they were all for Kelly, which we are on this show, too. We are huge Kelly fans, so we hope she wins.

COSTELLO: Well you know Justin's going to win, though, because I hear 12-year-old girls are quite enamored of him and they vote in a viewer vote. And if lots of them like cast their ballot, he's in.

RYAN: There's a lot of 12-year-olds; but let me tell you, my wife is 35, she voted four times last night for Kelly. She was like -- she was like a little kid calling. She's like I got through, I got through, oh my God I got through. I'm like oh gee. This is -- and you know what's funny, Carol, this is a talent show. But what makes this so interesting was that they're so honest with these kids, the lot of who think they can sing but really can't, and they're honest with them. And it makes it so much more interesting than just a regular talent show.

COSTELLO: Oh it's so mean sometimes though.

TAYLOR: That's the best though. That's really what made this show is Simon being so brutally honest. It's great.

COSTELLO: Oh that's sick.

(LAUGHTER)

COSTELLO: Anyway, let's move on because I know you guys are talking about kids going back to school and the whole fashion issue.

TAYLOR: Yes.

RYAN: My kid is 10 years old, and luckily for me she doesn't insist on all the labels, et cetera, et cetera. But I mean I think most kids get past the age of like 10 or 11 and they're like I have to wear this and this and this.

TAYLOR: Yes, but, Dave, you also had a problem with your girl spending a whole lot of money on school clothes shopping. He couldn't -- he couldn't fathom why we had to spend tons of money, especially as girls.

COSTELLO: How much did you spend?

RYAN: $545 altogether.

COSTELLO: For a 10-year-old?

RYAN: Yes, but you know what, I mean it was a combination of like back-to-school supplies and this and that, and you know they overspent a little bit. And yes, all hell broke loose over at the Ryan house when that happened. So I'm like ...

COSTELLO: You're not kidding, because you're setting yourself up for a major -- you're -- you know how much money you're going to have to pay when she gets to be a teenager?

TAYLOR: Oh yes.

RYAN: She's going to have a job outside the home by the time she's 13, Carol. I insist on it. She's going to work full time and be a full time student so.

COSTELLO: Let me ask you this about fashion in school...

RYAN: Sure.

COSTELLO: ... because some of the fashions out for kids, I mean they're pretty sexy.

TAYLOR: It's a little racy.

RYAN: Yes, it is surprising, you know. And I asked Angi about this because Angi's a little bit younger than me, and I say you know what I can't believe that girl's wearing a belly shirt. And Angi says basically belly shirts to 13-year-old girls don't what -- mean what belly shirts mean to older people.

TAYLOR: Oh yes, I could not have gotten away with it. When I was in high school I remember I had a button down too low, and the principal actually stopped me in the hallway and he said button that thing up. And these...

COSTELLO: Well why don't -- why don't they do that now?

TAYLOR: I don't -- I don't -- you know it's just -- it's so a part of our culture. I think it's just -- I think people are just desensitized to sexy clothing now because it's everywhere you look.

COSTELLO: Yes, but a 10-year-old bearing her midriff, and you said that they think differently about it than adults do.

RYAN: They...

COSTELLO: What do they think about it, it's just cool?

RYAN: It's just cool. It's just fashionable, from what I understand. Yes, but we adults look at it and go oh my God, I can't believe -- cover that up, you know.

COSTELLO: You know something else that's different from when we were in school, you know back in the day,...

RYAN: Yes, way back then, yes.

COSTELLO: Yes, way back then. They have beepers and cell phones now.

TAYLOR: Yes.

RYAN: Yes, there's a -- there was a big article in the local paper here yesterday about whether kids should have beepers and cell phones at school. And I think most schools have banned them, but I think a lot of schools are being pressured to let kids have them because if there's some kind of emergency or they miss the bus or they're walking home or whatever,...

TAYLOR: There's been a lot of abduction attention lately in the news, too, and I think a lot of parents just really want to be in touch with their children at all times. So I think that's become an issue as well.

COSTELLO: Oh definitely.

OK, unfortunately we're out of time; but we so enjoy talking to you guys...

RYAN: Thank you, Carol,...

COSTELLO: ... every Wednesday.

TAYLOR: Thank you (ph).

COSTELLO: "The Dave Ryan Show"...

RYAN: Talk to you (ph) next week.

COSTELLO: ... from Minneapolis, thank you.
