CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Some of music's biggest stars were out last night for the third annual Latin Grammies.
Our Ana Maria Montero filed this report on the big winners.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANA MARIA MONTERO, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Celia Cruz showed us how it's done.

(FOOTAGE FROM AWARD SHOW)

MONTERO: Mexican beauty Palia (ph) turned up the heat.

MONTERO: And Colombian Juanes was joined on stage by Canadian Nelly Furtado for a little rock and roll duet.

(FOOTAGE FROM AWARD SHOW)

NELLY FURTADO, SINGER: Juanes is just so lovely and his music speaks to my heart and I think to everybody else's who listens to it, because it's pop music, but it's really special. It has so much musical integrity. And that's something I value a lot in my music that I listen to.

So for me, it's just like wooh! I get to celebrate with him on stage.

MONTERO: The first Latin Grammy of the evening went to veteran Rubela Celia Cruz in the best salsa album category, a prize she received from none other than 'N Sync's Justin Timberlake. However, one of Timberlake's favorites is actually another one of tonight's nominees.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, 'N SYNC: I love Marc Anthony. I think he's a wonderful songwriter, a great voice. I enjoy, actually, I love Marc Anthony's voice and I actually enjoy it more when I doesn't understand what he's saying. No, I mean his pronunciation comes through and you can tell that it's more, you can tell how heartfelt it is when he actually sings in Spanish.

MONTERO: Colombian It girl Shakira picked up the award for this year's best video, the Spanish version of her hit, "Whenever, Wherever," while her compatriot and multi-nominated Carlos Vives took home two in the tropical music categories.

This evening's big winner two years in a row was Spanish singer/songwriter Alejandro Sanz. Sanz's MTV Unplugged album garnered him three awards to put beside the four trophies he received last year. And finally, the best new artist Latin Grammy went to a Cuban- American off of Madonna's maverick Musica label, Jorge Moreno.

(on camera): While dozens of stars and their entourages arrived decked out in their finest threads to celebrate the best of Latin music, another smaller group also gathered outside the Kodak Theater. These men and women protested the absence of 22 Cuban musicians also nominated this evening, who were denied entry visas to the United States.
