KRIS OSBORN, CNN ANCHOR: Fred, a lot of discussion about this story. Authorities in Indiana have made an arrest in connection with an apparent child beating caught by a department store surveillance camera, a very disturbing video. Police have charged one woman with failing to report the incident in which the woman's sister apparently assaults they're small daughter in the store parking lot. Police are still searching for the mother and the little girl as well.
Anthony Hazen is the police chief in Mishawaka, Indiana. Maggie Jones is deputy attorney there. They both joins us now to discuss this situation. Thank for your time.

Chief Hazen, let's start with you. Now this sister is in custody. I understand you're not releasing her name, but what is the status of the investigation, and how are you going about trying to find this girl?

CHIEF ANTHONY HAZEN, MISHAWAKA POLICE: We have actually had quite a few calls and leads since this morning's viewing and airing of the incident. We are optimistic that we will find the young girl and mother.

OSBORN: About the status of this young girl, I heard a doctor in a report suggest that perhaps the trauma to her could be very, very serious, and she might be in dire need of medical attention.

HAZEN: Yes, when we first viewed the tape and we had the medical doctors look at it, they said if the blows would have struck the head in the right place or the wrong place, that the trauma to her could be severe.

OSBORN: Maggie Jones, I want to talk to you. We are looking at these very disturbing pictures. Obviously, this video could be used in a case of some kind down the road, no?

MAGGIE JONES, DEP. DISTRICT ATTY.: Yes. Absolutely.

OSBORN: Your reaction to it and to the kind of case that might be brought against the woman here, who we see, beating her own 4-year- old daughter.

JONES: My reaction to the video, I was just very upset. I continue to be -- find it very upsetting every single time that I view it, the way that the woman glances around the parking lot prior to assaulting the child. We'll be bringing battery charges against the woman, and those are set for review by a judge today, as a matter of fact. OSBORN: Battery charges. I can hear in the tone of your voice how disturbing this is to watch.

Chief Hazen, I wanted to ask you, apparently security personnel were able to notice suspicious or strange behavior involving the woman and her sister the store, and therefore, followed them out into the parking lot, correct?

HAZEN: Correct. What actually happened was they tried to exchange some merchandise. The store would not allow that to happen. The lady became angry inside the store. They asked her to leave. And then they actually followed her out with the cameras.

OSBORN: In your sense of where this investigation might go, obviously you are hoping to find this woman and bring charges against her.

HAZEN: Our main goal right now is, of course, to find the woman, but the main goal is the child. We really think she's needs some medical treatment. We want to prevent a future attack, and we are positive that someone would do this in an open parking lot would probably do it again.

OSBORN: Chief Anthony Hazen and Maggie Jones, thank you both for your time and commentary on this very disturbing video situation.
