RENAY SAN MIGUEL, CNN ANCHOR: California's Monterey Jazz Festival is music to your ears -- and music for your soul. The longest running jazz festival in the world is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. Our Daryn Kagan joins us now live from the festival with a very special guest.
Hey there, Daryn.
DARYN KAGAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, hello. And good morning, it's still morning out here, Renay, in Monterey.
I have to just tell you the significance of where I'm standing. This stage, this stage, at the Monterey Jazz Festival, this is the place where some of the greatest names in jazz have played, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis.
And the festival is also known for some of the great, young talent. And with me, right now, a perfect example of that, Roy Hargrove.
Good morning.
ROY HARGROVE, JAZZ MUSICIAN: Hi.
KAGAN: What is it for you, as a jazz artist, to be on the stage where some of the greats have played over the years?
HARGROVE: Oh, it's really exciting. I was just looking over there, they have like a -- it says Jimi Hendrix, 1967. I was just thinking, how long has that been here? I think one of the stagehands was telling me there was also some burn marks down there on the floor.
KAGAN: So, you're here also to make your own music. And you are kind of taking a new direction with yours, and you're going with more like, electronic funk?
HARGROVE: Right, yeah. We're having a good time. We have some very, very good musicians playing with us.
KAGAN: Got to tell you, we're having an even better time listening. How about giving us a sneak preview? Sound check, here is Roy Hargrove and his band.
