CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: And the Emmy winners are a lot of old time favorites and a veteran show.
CNN's Anne McDermott runs down the list of winners as television honors its best.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANNE MCDERMOTT, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): It was TV's night to honor TV stars and many of the honorees were old friends like Jennifer Aniston.

JENNIFER ANISTON: Well, thank you. Thank you.

MCDERMOTT: Another old favorite was another big winner, "The West Wing."

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: OK, here now the president of the United States.

MCDERMOTT: Well, no, Martin Sheen didn't win. But John Spencer and Allison Janney did. And the show itself was named best drama series.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The anal retentive side of you is not going to help you get girls.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I do OK.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MCDERMOTT: Stockard Channing did OK, too, winning for "West Wing" and "The Matthew Shepard Story." The miniseries "Band of Brothers" provided the show with one of its more emotional moments, as producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg led a band of performers onstage and introduced one of the real band of brothers, a WWII vet who brought the stars to their feet.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I salute you.

MCDERMOTT: Long running shows did well. "Saturday Night Live" and "David Letterman" picked up awards, and "Everybody Loves Raymond" picked up three Emmys, one for Doris Roberts...

(CLIP FROM "EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND") DORIS ROBERTS: Raymond, you scared me.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MCDERMOTT: One for Brad Garrett and one, finally, for star Ray Romano, whose parents were watching in the audience.

RAY ROMANO: This is only special because you're here tonight. This is for you.

MCDERMOTT: First time host Conan O'Brien was a hoot, playing guitar and having fun with actor Michael Chiklis's name.

CONAN O'BRIEN, HOST: I was chickless throughout most of my '20s.

MCDERMOTT: Chiklis had the last laugh with his surprise win for his role on "The Shield."

(CLIP FROM "THE SHIELD")

MICHAEL CHIKLIS: Just glad I could help.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CHIKLIS: I'd like to say to Conan, so much for being chickless.

MCDERMOTT: Things got a little more solemn when celebrities on tape began praising Oprah Winfrey.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You are inspiring. You inspire me.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MCDERMOTT: Even Winfrey was overwhelmed. But after accepting her Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, she came back to earth back stage.

OPRAH WINFREY: I won! I won! I won!

MCDERMOTT: Later, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani presented a special award to America, a tribute to heroes, the show that ran last September, after the terrorist attacks. In the year since then, some have suggested that Americans have been looking for comfort TV.

(CLIP FROM "FRIENDS")

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALES: Oh my god!

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MCDERMOTT: Which may explain why this show, "Friends," now in its ninth season, finally got an Emmy for outstanding comedy series.

Anne McDermott, CNN, Los Angeles. (END VIDEOTAPE)
