CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Veteran television shows and stars grabbed top honors at the Emmy Awards last night.
CNN's Eric Horng joining us live from L.A. with a rundown of the winners.

A big night there, wasn't it, Eric?

ERIC HORNG, CNN CORRESPONDENT: A very big night and sort of a late night for us, and, no doubt, a very late night for some of those Emmy winners, just getting home, probably, from some of those post- Emmy parties. But a lot of folks with some reason to celebrate. Everyone, you know, coming into the night thought that this would be the year of the Emmy newcomer, shows like "24," "Alias" and "Six Feet Under" especially sort of stealing the spotlight.

But in the end, some of the Emmy stalwarts stole the show.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

HORNG (voice-over): Hail to the "West Wing." The Oval Office drama took home some of the nights biggest awards, including Allison Janney for best actress, John Spencer for best supporting actor, and for the third year in a row, best drama.

MARTIN SHEEN, "WEST WING": We just surrendered to the script and they, I must say, this is our fourth year and it's gotten better and better and better.

HORNG: It was deja vu for Stockard Channing, grabbing two supporting actress awards, one for "The West Wing," the other for the made for TV movie, "The Matthew Shepard Story."

STOCKARD CHANNING, BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: To all those people that we know who are no longer with us, who have suffered from the inhumanity of their fellow man, may we never forget them.

HORNG: "The Shield's" Michael Chiklis provided perhaps the night's most surprising moment, winning best lead actor in a drama and becoming the first performer in a basic cable series to win a top acting Emmy. On the comedy side, the Academy showed its affection for...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Ray Ramona. Thank you.

HORNG: Romano won for best actor in a comedy, and his "Everybody Loves Raymond" costar's Brad Garrett and Doris Roberts took home supporting acting honors.

DORIS ROBERTS, BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: This is what happens when you're young and sexy.

HORNG: But the top prize went to "Friends." The sitcom, perhaps the sentimental favorite going into the night, won best comedy series. And "Friends" cast mate Jennifer Aniston was honored with best actress.

JENNIFER ANISTON, BEST ACTRESS: We've had an amazing time. With or without these we would, we are just thrilled.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

HORNG: And surprisingly a very quiet night for "Six Feet Under," the show with the leading 23 Emmy nominations. But in the end, lost out in pretty much all the major categories -- Catherine, back to you.

CALLAWAY: All right, thank you.

Thank you, Eric.
