BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: It is the morning after TV's big night, and a very, very good one to "Friends." The show won Best Comedy for the first time in eight tries; one of its stars, Jennifer Aniston, also a first-time winner.
KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin was there last night. He is in Los Angeles this morning to tell us about the big night.

How are you, Sam? Good morning.

SAM RUBIN, KTLA ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR: Very, very well, Bill -- good morning to you. Parties, I suspect, are still continuing here in Hollywood. No question about it.

Last night at the Emmys, a very long day for everyone, and as Chad told on the weather just a little earlier, extraordinarily warm in Los Angeles. So, you have the glamour and the glitz and people melting. Nothing like hearing stars complaining about the heat in their beaded dresses.

John Ritter donning the sunglasses, and then, Brad Garrett, who actually was a winner last night from "Everybody Loves Raymond." People making their way through considerably less security than in years past. Pregnant Cynthia Nixon there, really enduring the heat, as many other stars did.

But the mood (ph) generally was considerably lighter than a year ago, when of course, the Emmys had to be scheduled three separate times before the ceremony actually took place.

Once inside the shrine -- I think Jack Cafferty will enjoy this -- Gary Smith, the producer of the show who was warming up the crowd, says to the assembled, "Applaud with verve and laugh, even when you think it's not funny."

Anyway, with that designation, Conan had a pretty good evening, and it was a very, very good evening for Jennifer Aniston.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RUBIN (on camera): And they open the envelope...

JENNIFER ANISTON, EMMY AWARD WINNER: OK.

RUBIN: ... and they go, "Jennifer Aniston."

ANISTON: Yes. RUBIN: And take me through all of that.

ANISTON: I don't remember, is my biggest problem. I really -- it's such a blur to me. All I know is that I just kept saying to Brad -- I kept saying, did I thank -- I didn't thank Warner Brothers, and I didn't thank, you know, NBC, and I didn't thank my agents, all of those people. You know, you have those moments when you go, this is nine years, and all of a sudden you're just -- and I'm such a blithering idiot. I just wished I had thought about something to say, and I didn't do that. I didn't think I was going to win.

Oh, my God. Wow! Thank you. Thank you! Oh! I don't -- I -- well -- oh, boy. I just have to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. This has been the greatest nine years of my entire life.

RUBIN: It's a creative resurgence. The show came back.

ANISTON: I know. Where did we go? Did we go somewhere? I don't think so. I mean, you know, I'm not quite sure. I mean, we -- I always felt that we stayed -- we kind of stayed up there in terms of ratings and all of that. So, it was kind of funny.

RUBIN: And you know how it is. People don't want this to go away. So...

ANISTON: Nobody wants it to go away. We don't want it to go away. It's all very confusing, and we just need to go to therapy, truthfully, to work this out.

RUBIN: We'll get you three more couches.

ANISTON: OK, three more, like this.

RUBIN: I mean, but you know, the fact of the matter is, and you probably don't know, but when -- you know, it's the final year, it's not the final year.

ANISTON: Yes. Well, maybe that just makes intrigue.

RUBIN: What about for you?

ANISTON: I mean, as far as we know right now, it's our time (ph).

To work with this cast, who make me better every day, who inspire me every day, our writers, the most brilliant writers in television. And I would not be here, any of us would not be here without you guys, Marta, David and Kevin, and our crew and Ingar and (UNINTELLIGIBLE) service. I'm telling you. And my family and my dear friends, who I love so much, who keep me grounded. And my husband, I love you so much. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

RUBIN: I think she was truly surprised. And the thing that was so interesting, Bill, is, as we spoke one on one, I said, well, come on, everyone, Jennifer, had suggested you were very likely going to win. And she said, very deliberately, she hadn't been paying attention to any of that stuff.

A little later on this morning, we'll show you the other real shock of the evening. Michael Chiklis from a show called "The Shield" on a basic cable channel wins Best Actor in a Drama. People thought it was going to be a huge night for "Six Feet Under." It wasn't. And that was another one of the surprises of sorts at the Emmys.

HEMMER: Sam, we -- Brad Pitt could hardly contain his excitement. The man did not even rise to his feet to applaud his wife.

RUBIN: He's over the moon, isn't he? He is fairly -- he just wants to make sure that she gets up all right, but he's fairly measured, I think. But he was in -- you know, as measured...

HEMMER: Hey, Sam.

RUBIN: ... as strange as these people -- yes.

HEMMER: Measured is a good word.

RUBIN: OK.

HEMMER: Thank you. We'll see you at 9:00 a.m., OK?

RUBIN: See you in a little bit, all right.

HEMMER: Good deal. Sam Rubin out in L.A.
