DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: To California now, where a wildfire is raging near Los Angeles. It's forcing more people from their homes. Already, the blaze has destroyed dozens of structures, and it's only 8 percent contained.
Details now from Rick Lozano from our affiliate, KTTV.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RICK LOZANO, CNN AFFILIATE KTTV REPORTER (voice-over): Firefighters and water-dropping choppers hope this made even a small difference battling the Williams Wildfire.

Flames raced through the night, showing no mercy, consuming just about anything in its path. At first daylight, evidence of its fury: Embers that had been left in the wake of the firestorm flared up and swept through this rustic community. Homes dating back to the 1920s reduced to rubble and memories.

One homeowner braved the flames and won, but for a while, he wasn't sure.

JERRY GODE, HOMEOWNER: The rush of the wave coming through was scary. Thirty-foot flames, horrendous noise like a train or something, a freight train. Everything was lit up and smoke and crackling and popping and trees falling and propane tanks, you know, the pop-off valve goes and it sounds like a jet for like five minutes.

LOZANO: Later, the flames edged even closer to the foothills and to this upscale neighborhood. Residents watched nervously, hoping fire crews lighting backfires, and water-dropping choppers, would save their homes.

This, as billowing smoke blanketed the skies, creating a veil, a virtual smokescreen in front of the blazing sun.

KAGAN: And that was Rick Lozano of our affiliate, KTTV.
