Four Bank Employees, Customer Killed

DARYN KAGAN:, ANCHOR: We're working on getting someone on the phone on the situation in Norfolk, Nebraska. Five people killed in a bank robbery there, earlier today, 9:00 a.m. Central Time. Apparently three men went into a bank in this farming community. It's about 90 miles northeast of Omaha. Apparently they went in, they killed four bank employees and one customer. They are still on the loose.
Apparently after this bank robbery, they broke into a nearby home and stole a vehicle from there. It's believed they are on the run in that car, and they are driving a car -- it has temporary intransit tags and has it in the window instead of on the license plate area.

Once again, these three men still on the run following this horrendous bank robbery in Norfolk, Nebraska.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: We are trying to get someone on the phone. Do we have a reporter on the line right now?

OK, Jim Curry from WJAG is joining us now. Jim, what do you know about this story?

JIM CURRY, WJAG RADIO: Well, as you just said, we have five people that were killed in the bank robbery here in Norfolk this morning. It's in central Norfolk. It's a branch bank of U.S. bank. What we know, about 8:45 Central Time this morning, three armed Hispanic males walked into the bank. Four employees were shot, and one customer was shot. They are all fatalities at this time. You also reported the suspects fled in a white 2003 Subaru, and that was stolen from a house just right near the bank. It has left the town, obviously, and Norfolk police have had several reports of this white Subaru around the area, but nothing right new to reports that anything has been found.

Norfolk police will be holding a news conference in about 25 minutes or so. So hopefully we'll get a little bit more then.

HARRIS: Hey, Jim, have the police been able to go into the home where the car was stolen from? Was there anything there?

CURRY: No, not that we know of right now. Hopefully, we will hear more at the news conference about that type of thing, but all we know right now, there are five fatalities in town, and they are looking for three suspects.

HARRIS: How about any other eyewitnesses? I think I only saw word of one in the wires right now. CURRY: We had a husband of a woman who was sitting in the drive- through lane report that she was waiting to get a transaction and the tellers didn't come back, and then she heard some sort of gunshots and saw three men leave the bank.

KAGAN: Jim, tell us a little bit more about Norfolk. This sounds like a sleepy farming community. It's just about the last place you would expect a bank robbery like this to take place.

CURRY: Yes, we are best known as being hometown of Johnny Carson. And this will probably be the worst crime in city history. It is about 25,000 people. We are about 110 miles northwest of Omaha, agricultural community, industrial community. Close-knit community. So this is pretty tough.

HARRIS: This story that we covered in Illinois, small town in Illinois bank robbery, same sort of scene happened there months ago.

Jim, how wide an area are they setting up the dragnet right now, do you know?

CURRY: We are not quite sure right now. But Norfolk is the hub of northeast Nebraska, the largest town in the area. Everything else is pretty small, in the hundreds or thousands of people, so that could be even tougher to find someone out there.

But as far as coverage area right now, hopefully the news conference will shed more light on that.

HARRIS: I know this may sound kind of grim, the one customer and the four employees, was that everybody that was inside that bank, do you know?

CURRY: As far as we know, yes. The bank would probably have opened at 8:00, and this happened at about 8:45. So at that time of day, I would assume there weren't too many customers at the time.

HARRIS: Tough scene. Tough scene.
