CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Hip hop has made its way to your closet, really. From J.Lo to Jay-Z, urban fashion is one of the hottest looks in the industry.
CNN's Alicia Davis (ph) tells us all about it.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ALICIA DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): One of the fastest growing segments of the fashion industry is urban fashion. There has been a hip hop fashion explosion. From Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' Sean John line and Jay-Z's Roca Wear to J.Lo and rapper Eve, who is launching a line of women's wear called Fettish (ph) this fall. And the granddaddy of it all is rap mogul Russell Simmons.

EMIL WILBEKIN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, "VIBE": Well Russell Simmons with Phat Farm really kind of made the category of urban fashion.

DAVIS: Simmons recently celebrated 10 years in the fashion biz with his first show as part of the official New York Fashion Week, and he's not changing the basic formula that's gotten him this far.

RUSSELL SIMMONS, PHAT FARM DESIGNER: Classic American flavor, right, that's been our scene. We spell flavor a little bit different.

DAVIS: According to Simmons, that flavor adds up to $400 million in sales for 2002 in what is now the multibillion dollar industry of urban fashion.

SIMMONS: And we do everyday, lingerie, beds, bags, bedding, bags, belts, shoes, underwear.

DAVIS: And when it comes to the feminine side of his fashion empire, Simmons is keeping it in the family. Kimora Lee Simmons launched a women's wear line called Baby Phat two years ago.

KIMORA LEE SIMMONS, BABY PHAT DESIGNER: It turned out as sexy T- shirts on the runway.

DAVIS: What began as an accessory on Phat Farm's runway is now a full fledged fashion line in its own right and one that's drawing raves from fashion editors like Andre Leon Pally (ph) and stars like Tyra Banks and Brittany Murphy.

BRITTANY MURPHY, ACTRESS: And I'm a tremendous fan of Baby Phat and Phat Farm.

DAVIS: Next up, Simmons is expanding into design with a new Phat Farm phone and possibly even Phat Farm table and chairs on the way.

SIMMONS: The whole thing is about a lifestyle. It's about -- it's about, you know -- you know letting America live up to its greatness.

DAVIS: And it seems a lot of people want to be living Phat.

Alicia Davis, CNN.
