DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Remember that step-by-step instructions called "The Rules" is all the rage, supposed to tell women how to scoop up and land that man. Now there is the one for the guy, telling men how to pick up on women.
And CNN's Jeanne Moos went out and watched its author in action.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): If you want to leave her weak-kneed, maybe you need a guy that doesn't pussyfoot around.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Page 82, eye contact. Page 69, getting the number. It's all in the guide to picking up girls.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MOOS: But don't even think of leaving home without picking the right wingman, you know, a friend who will talk to the girlfriend of the girl you're interested in, always ready to take the grenade, as in keep the less attractive woman busy.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is how men really talk when they are in private.

MOOS: Manhattan lawyer Gabe Fishbar penned this little guy book about laying rap. Tips range from alcohol is very, very important to, don't dance, because most straight guys look foolish. But how good are Gabe and his wingman Michael (ph) following the guide's advice?

At a rooftop bar called Sutton Place, their first challenge was to figure out which women were single.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: She has her hand in her pocket.

MOOS: No go. They decided to sit next to two women deep in conversation.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Page 104, making the move.

(END VIDEO CLIP) UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Is that the phone -- excuse me, sorry. Is that the phone you can punch in, and you can put in like information? No, it's not. Okay.

MOOS: Turns out both have boyfriends, and in the lingo of the guide, they were "switch off," unreceptive.

Next.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I bet you'll never guess what she does.

MOOS: Computer network analyst Monica Emerson was switched on.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Monica's actually very cool. Monica's a sweet girl.

MOOS: Watch it Monica, they are deep into chapter two -- find out the girl's name quickly and use it during the rap. The guys ended up getting the phone number, and Monica was a good sport when we showed up ala candid camera.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I had no idea.

MOOS: On a one to 10 scale...

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I'd have to give it a six.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Six out of seven you mean.

MOOS: As for the pick-up line.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You look a little down. You could use a pick me up. Get it? I'm picking you up.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The pick-up line has been so overplayed in society.

MOOS: It's the follow-up conversation that counts, says Gabe. He and his wingman had some luck with two out-of-towners.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You call me. I'll buy you dinner.

MOOS: Throw in a cool word like "tenuous" or "demeanor."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They call them derivatives.

MOOS: And when we let the women in on the game...

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That is the very funny. He did a good job.

MOOS (on camera): Dave, do you have a girlfriend?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.

MOOS: And here's a situation that wasn't mentioned in the guide.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Did you get a card? Did I just spit on you, by the way? I'm so sorry. That would be classic.

MOOS: Maybe a wingman should supply goggles.

Jeanne Moos, CNN, New York.
