CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: And with a serial sniper still on the loose, people in the Washington, D.C. area are taking no chances.
Reporter Bruce Johnson of CNN affiliate WUSA has reaction from residents there.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BRUCE JOHNSON, WUSA CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): At the Mobil gas station in Aspen Hill, flowers adorn the pump where the sniper killed one of his victims. A fellow cab driver, afraid to give his name or show his face.

(on camera): As you drive around the county, are you looking around? Are you looking for something that might help police?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes. Everywhere I go I've been looking, you know, like it's a (UNINTELLIGIBLE), you know, I'm looking everywhere.

JOHNSON: Right now you're looking?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, I'm looking, you know?

JOHNSON (voice-over): Montgomery County police recruits on their hands and knees were looking today for clues to the sniper slayings.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Shell casings, what? Anything?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We're looking for anything right now.

JOHNSON: Police were searching from across the street of the Northgate Shopping Center, where one of the sniper's bullets punctured a window. Business appeared to be slow today.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You can't live in fear. You have to trust the police force.

JOHNSON: A few miles south at Georgia Avenue and Calmea Road (ph), where Montgomery County meets the District, flowers mark the spot of yet another slaying. But who is the sniper and what does he want?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think it's one of those terror cells.

JOHNSON: At the new downtown convention center construction site, it's topic number one at lunchtime.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think it's an ex-military dude.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: One of those guys that entered the country illegally.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Maybe he had a bad divorce, you know what I'm saying? Something went wrong in his life.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And got a grudge against U.S. citizens because who else you think would do something like this?

JOHNSON (on camera): Downtown Washington, Pennsylvania Avenue and 13th Street, you might think that people would feel safer down here with the taller buildings and slower moving traffic and apparent fewer places to hide. That's not always the case.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, I think about it every day, you know? It's, I'll be glad when they catch the person.

JOHNSON (on camera): Does it change the way you go about your day?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, I don't even come outside that much at lunchtime.

(END VIDEOTAPE)
