CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: There was a suicide bombing near Tel Aviv today, but suspicions kept the casualty count from being high.
CNN's Jerrold Kessel is live in Jerusalem with the latest on this story.

Jerrold -- what's up there?

JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, one Israeli woman, an elderly woman, killed and five other Israelis hurt and a couple of dozen more treated in hospitals for shock after the latest suicide bombing -- Palestinian suicide bombing on the edge of Tel Aviv on one of the major trunk roads there.

But it could have been worse -- a whole lot worse. And in a sense, this was a dramatic escape for passengers in a packed bus. Bus No. 87, as it was traveling, bypassing Tel Aviv, drew up to a bus stop there on that major trunk road, and the bus doors opened, the back doors.

A man tried to get on aboard the bus through the back door. The door shut on him. Normally, people alight on the front of the bus, and the door shut on him, and he was thrown back, fell back into the road. The driver and a couple of other passengers, including a paramedic, rushed out to treat him, thinking he had been badly hurt.

They began to treat him, but when they lifted his shirt, they got a shock. They saw some wires, and suddenly, someone put two and two together, saying, my gosh, this is a belt of explosives, a bomb belt. They yelled -- the driver yelled to people to run away. There was pandemonium as people rushed away.

The driver and the paramedic kept the man pinned down. But as he began to revive, they, too, felt that they'd better get away. They rushed away. The bomber scrambled to his feet, moved towards people who were still at the bus stop, stunned a little way away. And there, he blew himself up, killing, as I say, one woman and wounding at least five others on the spot, and others being treated for shock afterwards.

So, Israeli police had been on alert, higher alert than even usual, for a possible Palestinian suicide bombing. This, after Palestinian militant groups had vowed to avenge an Israeli action in Gaza earlier in the week, in which 16 Palestinians were killed -- Carol.
