CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We are awaiting a news conference from Montgomery County, Maryland for the latest on that sniper investigation. Authorities are trying to determine if a shooting death at a gas station near Manassas, Virginia last night is related to six deadly sniper killings.
Joining us with more, CNN's Jane Watrel, who is live in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Is there any update -- Jane?

JANE WATREL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Not yet at this point, Carol. We are waiting for the same news conference, and authorities are not linking this latest shooting to the others, but it does bear an eerie resemblance.

A single shot was fired, striking and killing the victim in a very busy area, as the victim went about everyday business.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

WATREL (voice-over): Could this gas station shooting be linked to a series of deadly sniper attacks? It happened last night about 30 miles southwest of Washington. A man, who had just finished pumping gas, was shot and killed.

COL. CHARLIE DEANE, PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY POLICE: A little after 8:10 p.m., a man was gassing his vehicle at the Sunoco station near the intersection of Route 234 and Interstate 66, and he had finished gassing the vehicle, and he was shot and he died on the scene.

WATREL: Streets near the gas station were immediately closed off. Over 100 law enforcement officials scoured the area for clues.

Maryland investigators went to the scene because of the similarities with a string of sniper attacks. Two of the Maryland shootings were at gas stations.

On Monday, a 13-year-old boy was critically wounded by the sniper at a middle school in Bowie, Maryland. Investigators discovered a shell casing outside the school and a tarot card, with the taunting message, "Dear policeman: I am God."

The random attacks have unnerved many here.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Now, it's everywhere, and it makes you very uncomfortable. You know, even standing here talking to you, it's like, ooh. So, it's a concern. It really is.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I am aware I have to gas up my car one of these days, and I'm wondering if it's going to change my decision of where I do it.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

WATREL: The shooting spree now enters its second week with six dead, two wounded, another possible victim and a sniper still on the loose.

Reporting live from Rockville, Maryland, I'm Jane Watrel.

Back to you -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Jane, thanks for the update.
