CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Another Washington suburb has joined the search for a sniper that has now taken seven lives. Virginia police say Wednesday night's shooting at a gas station is the latest in a string of deadly killings.
The fear factor is growing in the D.C. area., even prompting some school officials to cancel field trips and football games.

We want to head now to Montgomery County, Maryland and CNN's Jeanne Meserve.

Bring us up-to-date -- Jeanne.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, yesterday morning at this time, it looked like the sniper had killed again. Now, we know that he had.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHIEF CHARLES MOOSE, MONTGOMERY COUNTY POLICE: I'd like to report the shooting in Prince William County, the forensics work is returned, and that situation is linked to the situations here in Montgomery County, Spotsylvania County, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MESERVE: The seventh victim, a 53-year-old engineer from Gaithersburg, Maryland.

A disappointment for investigators, a white-paneled van that had been seen in the vicinity of the Manassas shooting, they have found that van. They have interviewed the driver. It now appears that it was not there in connection with the sniper at all.

Investigators have been very tight-lipped about what sort of evidence they found on the scene there. They did, however, reveal that they did not find any sort of communication from the sniper, like the tarot card that was found at the scene of a Monday shooting in Prince George's County here in Maryland.

There were some witnesses. They are, of course, being interviewed quite closely. Investigators hoping that that will give them some important clue, but they are still turning to the public, pleading with them to please call in with any information they might have. Various tip lines have now been consolidated. The phone calls are being answered by FBI agents, clearly hopeful that they will get some tidbit of information that could lead them down the right path in this investigation.

Meanwhile, the briefings have been cut back here. We have gotten less and less information from those briefings that are held. It is unclear to us at this point, Carol, whether there is little to tell us, or whether investigators are trying to limit their communication with the sniper.

Back to you.

COSTELLO: Yes, because that just may be a change in strategy for police, too. We just don't know.

MESERVE: That's right.

COSTELLO: All right, Jeanne Meserve, thank you very much -- reporting live from Montgomery County, Maryland this morning.
