CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: We head first now to Montgomery County, where the command center for the investigation is located. That's where we find our Patty Davis this morning.
Hello -- Patty.

PATTY DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Catherine.

Well, Police Chief Charles Moose came out twice yesterday with cryptic messages, apparently trying to communicate with the sniper.

In the first message, he said that they would soon respond to a communication they had received, and he had details of a letter left Saturday for police in the woods outside the Ponderosa, saying -- containing threats to children.

Now, here was the second communication.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHIEF CHARLES MOOSE, MONTGOMERY COUNTY POLICE: In the past several days, you have attempted to communicate with us. We have researched the option you stated, and found that it is not possible electronically to comply in a manner that you requested. However, we remain open and ready to talk to you about the options you have mentioned.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

DAVIS: Now, we're not sure what Moose specifically was referring to in that communication there, although CNN has learned that the sniper demanded $10 million in a note left in the woods after Saturday's shooting at this Ponderosa restaurant in Ashland, Virginia. Sources close to the investigation telling CNN the letter reveals a frustrated individual, the writer rambling on about how law enforcement has messed up the investigation.

Now, the "Baltimore Sun" reporting today that there has been a second note left after yesterday's killing; that in the woods in Aspen Hill, Virginia.

Conrad Johnson, a 35-year-old bus driver killed yesterday on the steps of his bus. Now, police say they are not officially yet connecting that to the work of the sniper, but they are acting as if it is. They are doing ballistics tests at this point.

That new letter, the "Baltimore Sun" reporting, apparently containing yet more threats.

Now, the latest shooting in Aspen Hill, Maryland came just a half mile from several of the first five fatal shootings about three weeks ago -- Catherine.

CALLAWAY: All right, Patty, thank you very much. I know you'll be with us there throughout the morning.

That's Patty Davis.
