CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: We return now to Montgomery County, Maryland. We're going to take you live to Silver Spring. Our Kevin Sites is getting some reaction there from diners.
But first, let's go to Patty Davis for the latest on the investigation.

Hello -- Patty.

PATTY DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Catherine.

Well, police not yet confirming that "Baltimore Sun" report. As you said, the "Baltimore Sun" reporting yet another letter left apparently by the sniper, this time in the woods after a killing yesterday of 35-year-old bus driver, Conrad Johnson.

Now, Johnson was gunned down on the steps of his bus in Silver Spring, Maryland in the Silver Spring community called Aspen Hill, not far from where some of the first killings took place.

Not known yet if that -- the killing is the work of the sniper, although police are acting as if it is. They're waiting for official ballistics results to come in.

Now, that letter reportedly containing more threats. And Chief Moose has been trying to apparently communicate, open a dialogue with this sniper.

Here was one of yesterday's cryptic messages from Moose.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHIEF CHARLES MOOSE, MONTGOMERY COUNTY POLICE: It is important that we do this without anyone else getting hurt. Call us at the same number you used before to obtain the 800 number that you have requested. If you would feel more comfortable, a private post office box or another secured method can be provided.

You indicated that this is about more than violence. We are waiting to hear from you.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

DAVIS: Now, Chief Moose came out twice yesterday with cryptic messages just like that apparently for this sniper.

There was -- the first letter now believed to be left by the sniper that was outside that Ponderosa restaurant where that killing -- or the shooting, rather, took place Saturday night. That man, the 37-year-old victim, in critical condition, abdominal wounds, other very extensive wounds that he is now recovering from.

In that first letter, the sniper demanding $10 million, and it contains an ominous threat to children that they are not out of this sniper's sight -- Catherine.

CALLAWAY: All right, Patty, thank you. That's Patty Davis.
