Assistant Secretary of State William Burns Arrived in Israel Short Time Ago

CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: U.S. Assistant Secretary of State William Burns arrived in Israel just a short time ago. His visit comes at an extremely difficult time, on the heels of the deadliest Palestinian suicide bombing in some three months.
We're going to take you live to Jerusalem, where Jerrold Kessel is standing by -- Jerrold, I understand that Burns will not be meeting with Yasser Arafat.

JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, that's a very important point, Carol, because it keeps in tune with the United States' semi- official policy, you could say, of trying to get Mr. Arafat onto the sidelines, into a less central position, as that much vaunted Palestinian, reform of the Palestinian Authority is supposed to take place. So Mr. Burns tomorrow will be meeting only with a galaxy of other Palestinian leaders down in Jericho, alongside his meetings with the Israeli leaders, both the prime minister, the foreign minister, defense establishment. But he will not be meeting with Yasser Arafat at his headquarters in Ramallah -- Carol.
