ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: First on CNN, making a federal case out of the D.C.-area sniper shootings, sources say the Justice Department will file more charges today against suspects John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo. That is expected less than an hour from now at noon Eastern.
CNN's Patty Davis joins us live from the Investigation Desk in D.C. with details -- Patty.

PATTY DAVIS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Anderson, John Muhammad and John Lee Malvo expected to be arraigned today in federal court on those federal charges.

Now, sources telling CNN those federal charges will include extortion, plus the use of a firearm while carrying out a crime of violence causing death. Another potential charge: interference with interstate commerce. Now, these federal charges could bring the death penalty for John Muhammad.

Federal charges come on top of state charges. Both Maryland and Virginia have already filed their charges, capital murder, attempted capital murder in the state of Virginia. We're looking at an antiterrorism statute being used against Muhammad.

Now, meanwhile, Muhammad and Malvo are now suspects in a slaying in Tacoma, Washington. That's what police said yesterday. Twenty- one-year-old Keenya Cook was shot in the head in February. A friend of Muhammad and Malvo says, in fact, that he lent them his .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun -- that handgun now connected to Cook's slaying.

And also, he says that he lent the pair a .44 magnum. That particular weapon, police say, has been linked to vandalism at a synagogue in Tacoma in May -- Anderson.

COOPER: All right, thanks very much.
