DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We are getting reports that at least four children have been killed in a powerful earthquake in southern Italy. The magnitude 5.6 quake caused part of the roof of a school to collapse, trapping dozens of children.
Our Chris Burns joins us by phone from Italy with details.

Chris, hello.

CHRIS BURNS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Daryn, hi.

The desperate search, the frantic search, continuing as night falls here in Italy. Yes, four people reported killed so far, pulled dead out of the rubble of that nursery school where the roof collapsed. And what slowed down this frantic search was the fact that the bridge leading to the school also collapsed. As this search goes 20 were rescued, 20 were pulled alive, eight of them injured. Twenty however remain under the rubble according to officials and that's where the frantic search is right now. They're trying to retrieve these 20 people, hoping they can find them alive. Now there was also a woman killed in that same town of San Giuliano di Puglia. She was killed when her house collapsed, according to officials.

In another town, a bell tower collapsed, in Santra . And in another town, this, this remote part in southeastern Italy, children were hospitalized. Keep in mind that this 5.4 magnitude earthquake happened at midday at the time when schools were packed with children. So it is quite possible that other people were injured during this earthquake. However, these reports are trickling in from remote parts of the Apennines. So we might hear more later -- Daryn.

Chris Burns, thank you very much.
