CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Time now for our Talk of CNN segment.
Today, Bruce Alan from WTOP Radio News in Washington, D.C. is joining us by phone to find out the hot topics that his listeners are talking about.

Good morning.

You've got a couple of close races there in the D.C. area.

BRUCE ALAN, WTOP RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: We do, Catherine.

In suburban Maryland, we have a House race that's particularly exciting with eight term Republican Connie Morella being challenged by Democrat Chris Van Hollen. Morella's district was redrawn by Democrats in the statehouse and it was redrawn to include a great number of minority voters, which tend to go Democratic. However, Connie is so popular -- people do call her Connie very often -- there aren't many disagreements on the big issues between the two candidates. And Chris Van Hollen's main campaign push has been the importance to Democrats over having another Democrat.

But Connie Morella has been doing fairly well. The two were in, at the radio station on Thursday doing a debate. There wasn't very much that they disagreed on and Connie is very popular. So Chris Van Hollen's still got some work to do, I guess, in the next 24 hours.

CALLAWAY: No...

ALAN: It's a very close race.

CALLAWAY: Yes, it is a close -- no nasty politics in that one.

ALAN: No, you know what? They're both very nice and they're both very civil and it's, in that respect, it's kind of a pleasure.

CALLAWAY: Well, isn't that pleasant? That's nice to hear. But what about the Maryland governor's race?

ALAN: Well, Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend is being linked to current governor, Paris Glendening, whose popularity has been declining. She's being linked to Glendening in almost every campaign message by Republican Robert Ehrlich, a Maryland congressman who is campaigning against Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.

This state, the State of Maryland has not had a Republican governor in 36 years. Heavily Democratic voter registration. But right now polls show a statistical dead heat, or Ehrlich even ahead in some polls. His message has been that he's a moderate and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend's message has been that he's not the moderate he says he is.

She has not been doing as well as expected overall, particularly with women. So she also has some work to do over the next 24 hours.

CALLAWAY: Yes, it is amazing the number of close races we're seeing, and it looks like you're not alone.

ALAN: It's going to be a late night Tuesday night.

CALLAWAY: Yes, it is.

All right, Bruce, thanks for being with us. Talk to you soon.

ALAN: OK, Catherine.
