CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Let's get back to the showdown with Iraq -- the U.N.'s big vote on Baghdad now just hours away.
Our senior U.N. correspondent, Richard Roth, tells us what to expect.

And, Richard, the vote is to take place around 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

RICHARD ROTH, CNN SENIOR U.N. CORRESPONDENT: Yes, that would be the earliest, and it's certainly early by U.N. standards, which tends to operate late at night.

But this time, the U.S. pressure to get a vote today seems to have paid off. France came on board yesterday. Russia seems to be ready to approve this resolution, which will tell the president of Iraq and his government that it must accept weapons inspectors back. And they'll be armed with this resolution, which will say, there will be serious consequences if Iraq in any way interferes.

President Bush yesterday at a White House news conference explained what this resolution will mean.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: It's now time for the world to come together and disarm him. And when this resolution passes, we'll be able to say that the United Nations has recognized the threat, and now we're going to work together to disarm him.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ROTH: Iraq thinks the goal of the resolution is quite different -- that the U.S. wants to take over Iraq's oil industry and expand its influence in the Middle East -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Richard Roth, thanks for bringing us up-to- date.
