BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Manassas, Virginia. Attorneys for John Muhammad now taking questions with reporters.
(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

PETER GREENSPUN, ATTY. FOR MUHAMMAD: ... the same rights each and every one of us, and each and every member of the public has, if they or their loved ones or the people they care about were in trouble for something that's minor or something horribly serious like this. So those rights are going to be assured, they are going to be protected and they are going to be maintained throughout this case.

I am requesting from this point forward that the public keep an open mind in this matter, that you not listen to the suspicion, the speculation, the innuendo, the conclusions, the half-truths, untruths and misinformation that is coming out of law enforcement sources. The information put out by law enforcement personnel to the media over the weekend is outrageous.

Whether or not the statement of Malvo is of legal use in a courtroom, and I suspect it likely is not -- he did have counsel, despite what everyone is saying, at the time of this interrogation in Fairfax County.

HEMMER: Peter Greenspun, lead attorney there for John Muhammad, as you heard Jeanne Meserve mention. Not a whole lot of ground covered in a 10-minute court appearance but they will get a status hearing in a couple -- about two weeks time, I believe, is what Jeanne reported there. Manassas, Virginia.

Right now, John Muhammad charged with killing 53-year-old Dean Meyers back on the 9th of October, getting gas, on a Wednesday evening there. A Vietnam veteran who left a large family behind and a nice collection of cars, too. Remember his story so well from the sniper story a couple of weeks ago.

That's the wrap from Manassas.
