CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: And now to Washington and some unfinished business the theme today.
Producer Paul Courson is joining us live from our -- from our D.C. bureau.

Hey -- Paul.

PAUL COURSON, CNN WASHINGTON BUREAU MORNING PRODUCER: Hi -- Catherine.

CALLAWAY: Good morning.

Let me ask...

COURSON: Well we've got like three pieces of unfinished business, really. You've got sniper shootings, you've got homeland defense and you've got Firestone tires. Remember that story?

CALLAWAY: That's right. Well let's start with the sniper suspects, one of them back in court today.

COURSON: Yes, John Lee Malvo is back in court today. His attorneys want to make sure he's kept in a juvenile facility as this case moves ahead in Fairfax County, Virginia. The lawyer wants to make sure he's not placed with grownups as the case moves ahead.

Malvo, by the way, has also been charged with murder in Washington, D.C. Indictment has language in it that says Malvo told interrogators early on that he remembered shooting an elderly person in D.C., northwest Washington. And now that's part of the first public record that we've seen of him admitting any kind of complicity in this entire string of sniper shootings...

CALLAWAY: Right.

COURSON: ... around the Washington, D.C. area.

CALLAWAY: Quickly on the homeland security bill, is the Senate going to vote on this?

COURSON: Well they might vote today, they might debate it some more, Catherine. One of the things that is under discussion right now is the insurance liability provision that has been put into it. You might say what does insurance liability have to do with homeland defense? Well it has to do with the pharmaceutical industry and protecting them against liability for any side effects that have to do with vaccines against germ warfare.

CALLAWAY: And quickly, before you go, the Firestone tires. You mentioned it so you need to give us details on that.

COURSON: Firestone tires...

CALLAWAY: Whenever we hear that, we pay attention.

COURSON: This time it's Steeltex. The Wilderness Firestone tire was the one from a few years ago. This time it's Steeltex. It goes on ambulances, trucks, school buses, and they apparently also suffer some sort of tread separation problem. Today a lawyers group has a news conference to petition the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to recall Firestone Steeltex tires.

CALLAWAY: All right, Paul, thank you. A busy day for you guys in Washington, I know you'll keep it covered for us. Thank you.
