CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: You know, the hype has been almost unbearable, but today it pays off -- or will it? The new Bond movie, "Die Another Day," opens today. It's the 19th installment in the Bond series. Of course, the beauty of this one is Halle Berry.
Here's CNN's Jason Carroll and the Bond girl.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): This secret agent can fence and fight her way out of any dangerous spot and look good doing it. Forget the standard Bond babe.

PIERCE BROSNAN: She's a female Bond.

CARROLL: Meet 007's match. BERRY: My friends call me Jinx.

CARROLL: Halle Berry is Jinx in the latest Bond flick, "Die Another Day." Her character, unlike Bond girls of the past. BERRY: I'm a girl that just doesn't like to get tied down.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This time she also is Bond's equal for real.

CARROLL: Despite some differences, there are still similarities between Bond girl 2002 and the first one back in 1962. Ursula Andress set the standard in "Dr. No." What followed over the years, a list of actresses remembered mostly for their character's name.

SEAN CONNERY: What's your name?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Holly Goodhill.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My name is Pussy Galore.

CONNERY: So you are the mysterious Octopussy.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Right-O.

CONNERY: Right-O, what?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) right-O.

CONNERY: I must be dreaming.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: My name is Leticia Lesgrove (ph).

CARROLL: Berry's Oscar winning performance in "Monster's Ball" may be proof the character Jinx won't overshadow Berry the actress. BERRY: I met your daddy.

CARROLL: Berry started working on Bond just two days after winning the Oscar. BERRY: I feel better in my skin, you know, and some of that has to do with the accomplishment of Oscar, absolutely. You know, I think my peers in the industry, you know, I think respect me a little bit more, and that feels good.

(CLIP FROM UNIDENTIFIED FILM) BERRY: I've got rhythm.

CARROLL: Berry has almost two dozen films to her credit, an eclectic mix of drama and action. BERRY: I like both genres. I like the kind of work I get to do in each one. And I would like to continue to be a kind of actress that could slip in and out of both.

CARROLL: One former Bond girl, Jane Seymour, alias Solitaire, says casting Berry was a boost for all the girls.

JANE SEYMOUR: Well, it gives all of us some credence because for years people said Bond girls disappear, you know, and I was about the only one that ever worked again. So, Halle Berry, of course, came straight from the Oscar to be a Bond girl. I think that's pretty cool.

CARROLL (on camera): Berry doesn't plan on disappearing after doing Bond. In fact, she's working on six projects. Jinx might not disappear either. There's talk of spinning off the series and giving Jinx her own film. BERRY: Looks like we're going down together.

CARROLL (voice-over): Would Berry be open to a Jinx 2? BERRY: In a heartbeat. In a heartbeat.

CARROLL: In the meantime, it's red carpets and accolades for Berry, not your average Bond girl.

Jason Carroll, CNN, New York.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: Not at all. Halle Berry is in the spotlight tomorrow on CNN's "People In The News." You can catch it throughout the day, first at 11:00 a.m. Eastern and then at 3:00 p.m. and again at 1:00 Eastern time.
