CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Now to the Middle East crisis, we go to Bethlehem, where Israeli troops are in control of Manger Square once again.
CNN's Matthew Chance comes to us live by videophone from the scene.

Good morning.

MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Carol.

And that's right, Israel continues its response to that devastating suicide attack in West Jerusalem on Thursday, which left, of course, 11 Israelis dead and many more injured.

Israeli tanks and armored personnel carriers entered the outskirts of Bethlehem, where the man identified as the suicide bomber lived with his family. They entered the Bethlehem area in the early hours of this morning, surrounded it first at the Dheisheh refugee camp just outside the main city of Bethlehem.

At the same time, as you mentioned, Israeli tanks, armored personnel carriers moved swiftly into the center of Bethlehem to Manger Square to seal off the entrance points to the Church of the Nativity, we're told, in order to avert a kind of standoff that occurred earlier this year between the suspected Palestinian militants and Israeli forces in and around that church.

Operations have been continuing inside the refugee camp. We're told by Israeli officials some 20 people have been arrested. They say these are pinpoint operations to take out members of the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, which, of course, has claimed responsibility for carrying out that Jerusalem bombing -- Carol.

COSTELLO: All right, Matthew Chance, thanks for the update from Bethlehem.
