CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: And so our coverage of Michael Jackson in Germany ends for now. But we are covering much more on the international front. To see what and where, we're joined by our international editor Emer Sutin.
EMER SUTIN, CNN INTERNATIONAL EDITOR: Hi, Carol. How are you?

COSTELLO: Good morning.

Oh, this situation in Nigeria is just bizarre and sad.

SUTIN: It is, yes. Right now, we had our correspondent Jeff Koinange on a plane to Abuja, which is where the 90 contestants for the Miss. World competition are at the moment. We turned him around and we sent him to Kaduna, which is where rioting is getting totally out of hand. You're talking about upwards to 100 people dead, almost over 500 people injured. And we're getting this from Red Cross officials. So...

COSTELLO: Now, just fill the audience in on why this is happening. Apparently there was an editorial in a newspaper there...

SUTIN: On Wednesday. And that editorial said that if the Prophet Muhammad was still alive today, he would want to marry one of these beauty queens. And that upset an awful lot of Muslims, which led to the rioting. And it's just...

COSTELLO: And this is really violent rioting.

SUTIN: Oh, yes.

COSTELLO: People are being burned to death.

SUTIN: Yes, houses are being, you know, burned down and I mean it's just, it's dreadful. So he'll be there with video phone. So hopefully we'll be able to get him off live in the next few hours as soon as he arrives and, you know, see what happens there. That's a huge story. And I mean initially that Miss. World, you know, pageant was just mired with controversy because originally some of the contestants didn't want to go there because the Supreme Court had sentenced a woman to death for adultery and so on.

COSTELLO: Right. By stoning, sentenced her to death by stoning.

SUTIN: Yes, yes. So it's not been a good time for the Miss. World competition.

COSTELLO: What else do you have on tap?

SUTIN: Well, as you mentioned earlier, as you could see earlier, Matthew Chance is in Bethlehem and he's live on vid phone. Hopefully we'll fix any audio problems.

COSTELLO: We'll work out those audio problems.

SUTIN: Yes. And, you know, Robin Oakley in London at street level with the firefighters' strike. It'll be an eight day strike. We're watching and monitoring the situation with the Air France situation. And...

COSTELLO: Yes, tell us more about the Air France situation. Was it an attempted hijacking?

SUTIN: Well, we're hearing from the airport that there was an attempt and the Canadian police will make a statement at 8:15 a.m. Eastern. So hopefully we'll be able to bring that in. We still have a lot of questions that need to be answered, but we're there and I know that the agencies are there at the airport. So hopefully we'll get video and we'll get answers shortly.

COSTELLO: Got you. OK. I know you're busy, so we're going to let you get back to work.

SUTIN: OK. Correct.

COSTELLO: Emir, thanks.

We appreciate it.
