Rioting in Nigeria

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We begin our coverage this morning in northern Nigeria, where more than 500 people have been injured in rioting. There are also reports that more than 100 people have been killed. The violence broke out earlier this week after reports the Miss. World pageant would be held in Nigeria's capital and would be acceptable to the Prophet Muhammad.
JEFF KOINANGE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: The authorities are trying their best, but every now and then these incidents are so sporadic, in one part of a town or another part, the authorities cannot surround the whole town and go door to door. They are, you know, they're completely overwhelmed. They are trying their best and the Red Cross is also aiding in trying to calm things down, trying to make sure that, you know, it's not reciprocated, Muslim-Christian, Christian- Muslim.

The people are really trying their best but, you know, they're overwhelmed. It's a tough task and it's sporadic. It's spread out and you can't contain it, all of a sudden, you know, all in one go. It's difficult.
