CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Time to talk turkey, eating turkey that is. And our favorite dietitian, Lisa Drayer, is back with us this morning.
And, Lisa, I understand you have some tips for us on how to eat healthy this Thanksgiving.

LISA DRAYER, NUTRITIONIST: Absolutely. You can have a delicious Thanksgiving meal that won't wreak havoc on your waistline.

CALLAWAY: Tell us about it.

DRAYER: Yes, well, basically the idea is making simple substitutions. That's the key with the holidays is just making, you know, switches in certain ingredients that can save you close to 1,500 calories, which translates to a day's worth of calories. So we just want to make some simple substitutions.

CALLAWAY: Like what?

DRAYER: For example, instead of having potato chips, they're high in fat and calories, choose almonds along with raisins. That's great to snack on. And almonds are a source of heart healthy fats. Also, instead of cheese and crackers, choose pears to put your cheese on instead of crackers. Crackers can be high in fat and cheese also packs a big calorie punch. So you want to choose lower fat varieties such as goat cheese, mozzarella cheese or feta cheese.

CALLAWAY: And I understand you have a 20 minute rule. What is that, you can't eat longer than 20 minutes?

DRAYER: No, no, no, of course not. Obey the 20 minute rule, right? It takes 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that it's full. So, what I say is if you still feel hungry after you've eaten, wait 20 minutes, talk to your neighbor, you know, take a glass of water and then, after 20 minutes have passed if you still feel hungry, then feel free to take seconds from the lower calorie dishes. But do allow that 20 minutes to pass by.

CALLAWAY: All right, push yourself away from the table, then, and wait a while is what you're saying?

DRAYER: Right.

CALLAWAY: OK, Lisa, thank you very much.

DRAYER: Thank you. CALLAWAY: That's Lisa Drayer.
