CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Israelis were fighting attacks on two continents yesterday. In Israel, two Palestinian gunmen also opened fire at a primary voting place, killing six Israelis and injuring 20 others.
And this morning, a Palestinian fired shots on a Jewish settlement in southern Gaza, leaving three people wounded.

CNN Jerusalem bureau chief Mike Hanna has more on this latest outbreak of violence there.

MIKE HANNA, CNN JERUSALEM BUREAU CHIEF (on camera): A day on which Israelis counted the cost of 24 hours of violence, violence outside as well as inside the country, Israel dispatched a fleet of aircraft to the Kenyan port city of Mombasa to bring back a large number of wounded, more than 20 people wounded in that bomb attack Thursday.

Also brought back, come (ph) the aircraft, three bodies -- the three Israelis who were killed in the suicide bomb attack at the Paradise hotel. A large number of Israelis as well returned to their country, deciding to cut short their holiday.

And Israel contemplating, too, a terror attack inside its country, six Israelis were killed in northern Israel Thursday, when Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a crowd of civilians. In the course of the day, Israel taking retaliation for this attack and destroying the homes of the two gunmen who carried out the killings.

This against a backdrop of a primary election, an election won handsomely by Israeli leader, Ariel Sharon, who defeated his foreign minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. But Sharon was clear it was not a day for celebration. And he used the occasion of his victory speech to make clear that Israel would find and track down those who carried out the attacks in Kenya.

So, a day for Israelis on which they contemplate the reality of the fact that they are not only facing attacks inside their country, but beyond its borders as well.

Mike Hanna, CNN, Jerusalem.
