Is Anyone Rushing Out to Grab Early Bird Specials?

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: OK, let's talk shopping again, one of my favorite topics, shopping.
Of course, the day after tonight traditionally is the biggest shopping day of the entire year. But it anyone rushing out to grab all those early bird specials?

Well, we know one early bird, Jeff Flock.

He joins us live from the Westfield Shopping Town in Skokie, Illinois -- good morning.

JEFF FLOCK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, good morning to you.

Everybody's shopping, but is anybody buying? That's a big question we want to ask. Well, they're ready, anyway. Take a look across the mall here at the beautiful Christmas tree. Isn't that something? I'll tell you, the, they have spared no expense in decorations this year, I think, at least. And we want to get some sense of what they think the year is going to hold.

I want to poke my head inside. This is even before the store has opened. You guys are opening regular time. You didn't decide not to do some big early bird deal over here, right, is that the situation?

JASON: No, no. We're opening at our standard time. It's 8:00 a.m. FLOCK: So you're confident this is going to be good, you don't have to open to get enough sales?

JASON: Oh, no, we've been experiencing phenomenal sales. So it should continue on through the holiday season.

FLOCK: Got you.

I want to buzz through the store here and talk as we do.

JASON: Sure.

FLOCK: What you've been doing in the last hour or so is getting the displays all ready. You want to make sure, the great thing about your store is you can come in and play with things and...

JASON: Correct.

FLOCK: And you want to make sure that everything works. The worst thing, you come to a store and the display doesn't work so. JASON: Right, that's one of the main concerns for us. But everything's nice and functioning very well so.

FLOCK: Got you. Well, now if I come into The Sharper Image and I say, hey, Jason, I need something neat and cool. I'm here. I've got no ideas. What do you show me? What's the first thing you show me this year?

JASON: Sure. One of the things that everybody's pretty much excited about is what we call Sharper Image design's Now You Can Find It. And what it is is you could actually attach it to your keys, your Palm Pilot or any important item that you, you know, in case you might lose, like...

FLOCK: So you hit this and this finds it for you?

JASON: Correct, and it beeps for you.

FLOCK: Got you. Great. OK.

COSTELLO: Oh, fabulous.

FLOCK: Because that's what people come in here for, I take is, is they look to find cool, interesting things, right?

JASON: Correct. Our main thing is just to find stuff that, you know, makes life more, you know, far more enjoyable so.

FLOCK: Right. And tell me, if you can, before we get to another product, this season. I mean it's, you've got looming war in Iraq. You've got concerns about economic news. Are you worried about this holiday season?

JASON: Well, that's actually on the contrary. We're very confident that this is going to be a great, wonderful season for us, for The Shaper Image.

FLOCK: Because you look like you've got a lot of product and stuff in here.

JASON: Correct. Right.

FLOCK: And, again, give me something else cool. Give me one more thing before we get away, what I'll see if I ask you help me here, help me.

JASON: Well, one of the top selling, you know, even though this is one of our top selling products, the nose hair, the battery powered nose hair trimmers, a lot of people might be apprehensive about that.

FLOCK: OK.

JASON: We feel we've solved that problem with the executive travel kit. And what that includes is not only do you get the turbo groomer, you also get a nice little leather case and you get this nice travel alarm clock with the LCD display, so. FLOCK: So, Carol, if you were thinking, you know, you really didn't want to come in and say I need a nose hair trimmer, they've found a way for you to ask for it.

COSTELLO: If you bought a loved one a nose hair trimmer, Jeff, I don't think you'd be in good standing, do you?

FLOCK: I think I've learned and I have the alimony payments to prove that I have learned that's not a good gift.

FLOCK: Another day.

COSTELLO: Yes, really.

Ionic hair dryers, do they have those?

FLOCK: Ionic hair dryers. Ionic hair dryers. If I come in and ask you for an ionic hair dryer, you tell me?

JASON: It's right over...

FLOCK: Right over there?

JASON: Right there.

FLOCK: We've got it all.

COSTELLO: Yes.

FLOCK: You know, you threw me a curve, but I just scored on that one.

JASON: That is an ionic hair dryer.

FLOCK: Oh, look, ionic conditioner.

COSTELLO: Get that for your loved one, Jeff, instead of the...

JASON: Well, what it does is actually not only does it dry your hair...

FLOCK: OK, we're going to get a sales pitch with that.
