CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: The U.S. military is helping Kenya prepare to fight al Qaeda and other terrorist groups.
Our Nairobi bureau chief, Catherine Bond, looks at joint exercises under way aboard the USS Austin in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Kenya.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CATHERINE BOND, CNN NAIROBI BUREAU CHIEF (on camera): The first military exercises of U.S. Marines have been (UNINTELLIGIBLE) warfare for the past 10 days on the Kenyan coast. It's the first training exercise they've done since leaving the state three months ago. They spent some time in Kosovo doing cold weather training, and some time in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa doing heavy combat and live firing exercises.

Some of the exercises here were carried out with Kenyan forces, for example, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) and air force (UNINTELLIGIBLE) yesterday with a platoon of Kenyan soldiers.

The Marines are supported by offshore vessels like this one, the USS Austin, which is here to be able to give them landing capability and to bring their vehicles and equipment here from shore.

The Marines are (UNINTELLIGIBLE) three more months and one more exercise in the region before they return to states.

Catherine Bond, CNN, the USS Austin, Indian Ocean.
