CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: There is a new twist to the Trent Lott controversy. This just in to CNN. AP is reporting the Senate's number two Republican leader, that would be Senator Don Nickles, the GOP whip, he is calling for Trent Lott -- he is calling actually for a new election for the majority leader's job that Senator Lott is set to hold in the new Congress.
In other words, he wants senators to vote again on the job of majority leader, a job that Senator Trent Lott said he will not step down from.

These words from Don Nickles. "I am concerned that Senator Lott has been weakened to the point that may jeopardize his ability to enact our agenda and speak to all Americans." Apparently he said this on ABC's "This Week." Again, Don Nickles calling for a new election to hold the seat of majority leader in the U.S. Senate.
