CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Two big names are getting together this morning for what could be a big meeting.
We want to check in with Washington producer Paul Courson for our "Beltway Buzz."

Good morning -- Paul.

PAUL COURSON, CNN WASHINGTON MORNING PRODUCER: Yes, Secretary of State Powell and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld get together today at the State Department. They'll be hosting a delegation of Japanese diplomats today, including Japan's Foreign Minister and the Director General of Japan's Defense Ministry, pretty big names on the Japanese part as well.

What's interesting about this, we don't know the content yet of what the meetings will have to do with, but we do know that both Secretary of State Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Powell will come out to the cameras afterward and tell us what's been going on. This will be our chance to ask them more for an update on Iraq. The papers that Iraq has submitted as far as its disarmament compliance is concerned and any questions about the U.N. inspection teams that are patrolling Iraq right now.

COSTELLO: Got you. Talking about big names, there's a big name floating around to replace Henry Kissinger on the 9/11 Commission, who is it?

COURSON: Bob Dole. Bob Dole, the 1996 president candidate. No controversy surrounding him right now. He's been working on a retirement awareness campaign, and of course earlier was lobbying on behalf of his wife, Elizabeth Dole, who successfully took a Senate seat representing North Carolina.

Bob Dole would head this independent commission at the White House looking into what happened around 9/11. Henry Kissinger stepped down out of -- after about a week on the job, citing some possible conflicts of interest that were raised before him to have to deal with. He does a lot of international consulting. Some of the countries he represents or consults with could be involved in some way with the 9/11 plotting by the alleged terrorists, and so he stepped down, and Bob Dole is among the candidates mentioned to succeed him.

COSTELLO: Interesting. Paul Courson live from Washington.
