CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Now, back to our top story. The strike that would have brought New York City to a screeching halt has been suspended.
Our Jason Carroll is with us live from the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Not out of the woods yet, though, right?

JASON CARROLL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well I got to -- things are looking pretty good out here right now you know, Carol. Traffic is moving smoothly.

Take a look at the front page of the "Daily News," it really pretty much says it all. Headline reads "We Ride On this Morning." A lot of New Yorkers are going to be riding on on the city's subways and buses simply because a strike has been averted at least for one more day.

Last night, just before a midnight deadline, the head of the union that represents the city's subway and bus workers came out and said enough progress had been made on non-economic issues to keep talking. Certainly good news to a lot of New Yorkers who depend upon the city's subways and buses, seven million New Yorkers, in fact, ride the city's subways and buses each day. So both sides still at the bargaining table, good news for New Yorkers, for commuters. Commuters are hoping that the evening commute will go just as smoothly as this morning's -- Carol.

COSTELLO: We hope so too. Thank you, Jason.
