FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: Colin Powell, Iraq and international diplomacy top our "Beltway Buzz" this morning.
Washington producer Paul Courson joins us live.

Good morning - Paul.

PAUL COURSON, CNN WASHINGTON MORNING PRODUCER: Morning, Fredricka.

Yes, it's a high level...

WHITFIELD: What's happening there? A lot I'm sure.

COURSON: It's a summit level meeting...

WHITFIELD: Yes.

COURSON: ... between Secretary of State Powell at the State Department hosting high level members of the European Union. Of course the United States has been trying to get European Union support, the allies, to back us if there is any need for military intervention in Iraq as part of the effort to make sure they are disarmed of their weapons of mass destruction. The talks at the State Department today may very well involve diplomacy and what kind of diplomatic maneuvering is involved. And then all of the delegates come to the cameras to tell us what they've talked about.

WHITFIELD: All right. Holiday travel, a lot of folks thinking about getting away. Of course that's a big buzz inside the Beltway and outside as well, too.

COURSON: Well you know United Airlines when they filed their bankruptcy proceeding caused a lot of holiday travelers some concern as to whether their tickets are still going to be any good or not. United is promising that they'll get us past the holiday period before they do their cutbacks needed to make sure they can stay in the air.

But separately, there's a report coming out today, Fredricka, that shows a lot of the short haul flights have been cut back. Short haul being flights of a few hundred miles. They're just not profitable. And a report coming out from a group called Reconnect America will do a survey of airports and the schedules that have been cut back that travelers are probably finding out about.

WHITFIELD: All right, Paul, thanks very much. Good to see you.
