FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: All right, time to lighten up a little bit this morning. In Beverly Hills, the best actors and films will be recognized with Golden Globe nominations.
And CNN's Eric Horng is at the site of the nominations with a preview now.

Hi -- Eric.

ERIC HORNG, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Fredricka, good morning.

A very early morning here in California here this morning. I guess if you were a writer, producer, director this is one of the few mornings here in Hollywood you don't mind getting that early morning wake-up call.

But to give you an idea the importance of the Golden Globes, 8 out of the last 12 films that won the Golden Globe for best drama ended up winning the top prize at the Oscars. So all eyes in Hollywood will be on these announcements this morning to see which films receive that Golden nomination.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

HORNG (voice-over): This year's crop of heavyweights in the best drama category includes "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," "Antoine Fischer," and "The Hours." So is there a favorite so far this award season? The L.A. Film Critics Association named as its best film the Jack Nicholson drama "About Schmidt," but the New York critic circle honored the '50s-style melodrama "Far From Heaven."

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's a very strong field in that it's wide open. It was one of those years where you didn't have maybe a masterpiece or two coming out but you had some really strong films.

HORNG: Last year, "Moulin Rouge" took home the Golden Globe for best comedy or a musical. This year, another musical, "Chicago," is generating early buzz in that category and could earn Renee Zellwegger, Richard Gere and Catherine Zeta Jones acting nods. Also likely to get a chance at gold, the sleeper hit "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," co-produced by Tom Hanks.

RITA WILSON, ACTOR: Accolades (ph).

TOM HANKS, ACTOR: There's dozens of people holding their breath,...

WILSON: Yes.

HANKS: ... holding their breath waiting for those Golden Globe announcements.

HORNG: Hanks could also receive acting nominations for two other films, "Road to Perdition" and "Catch Me If You Can." Also likely to be honored, Daniel Day-Lewis from "Gangs of New York," "Far From Heaven's" Julianne Moore and "Unfaithful's" Diane Lane.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You're the only thing in my mind when I wake up.

HORNG: On the television side, if the past is any indication, expect nominations for "The Sopranos," "Six Feet Under," "Twenty Four" and "The West Wing."

(END VIDEOTAPE)

HORNG: And if the Hollywood Foreign Press Association sticks to its reputation of welcoming newcomers in the TV category, expect nominations for shows like "Boomtown," "Scrubs" and "The Shield."

Fredricka, back to you.

WHITFIELD: And, Eric, maybe I'm just out of it, but I didn't even know "Chicago" had been released yet, and it's already up for nominations possibly?

HORNG: Sure, a lot of these films have not been released yet and a lot of that is...

WHITFIELD: How does that work?

HORNG: A lot of that is sort of done on purpose. A lot of these studios release these films to the general public perhaps the last week of the year, the second to last week of the year and a lot of them are sort of eligible in that -- in that regard. But a lot of this is done on purpose because they want these films to sort of stick in the minds of these critics and Academy members prior to the awards season.

WHITFIELD: That makes me feel better. I was just thinking, man, I really don't get out very much because I missed that.

All right, thanks a lot. Have fun.

HORNG: Sure.
