CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: Troops, American troops defending the country. U.S. servicemen and women have had to spend the holidays away from home and that, as you know, can be especially tough on Christmas.
CNN's Karl Penhaul joining us from Bagram, Afghanistan. Tell us what's being done for those fighting the war against terror.

Hello, Karl.

KARL PENHAUL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Catherine.

Well, the Christmas mood is finally stepping in here at Bagram Air Base. Bagram Air Base, as you know, is home to 5,000 American troops.

They tell us there's even been a bit of a rush down at the PX store; that's the military store. The PX store is opening today and there's been long, long lines queuing up for last minute Christmas food stuffs and also for gifts to send back home to the family.

Many of the troops are saying that they didn't really feel in the Christmas spirit until this morning, in fact. This morning we have had a bit of snow here. It's one of our heaviest snowfalls so far this winter. And so from the base, you can see snow on the mountains outside.

And a number of the troops are saying this morning, even, they came out and saw the snow, had a tear in their eyes. That made them think back of home and think of Christmas back at home. Well, they're probably hearing what the weather's like back there. The weather here isn't quite so severe -- Catherine.

CALLAWAY: All right. Thank you, Karl. That is Karl Penhaul from Bagram. Thank you.
