CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: President Bush is heading to Fort Hood, Texas at this hour where he's expected to speak to the troops. We'll have the president's remarks live when they happen at the end of the hour. But for now, our White House correspondent, Dana Bash, is near the Bush ranch in Crawford with a preview -- Dana.
DANA BASH, CNN WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Carol. Well, the president is heading from Crawford for the first time in about a week outside his small town here to Fort Hood Army Base. That is in Killeen, Texas. It is just a short ride away. Fort Hood is actually one of the largest bases in the country, and he's going to review the troops while he's there. He is going to give a speech thanking the troops for their service, and he is also going to have lunch with the troops.

Now, Fort Hood calls itself the premier installation to train and deploy heavy forces. It's also the home of the first cavalry, which is about 17,000 troops and its mission and vision, they say, is to maintain combat readiness.

Now, will they have to be ready? Now, the president yesterday said -- talked to reporters and said that he is not -- has not made a decision to attack Iraq, but in fact, if he does do that, we're sure that there will be thousands of troops heading from Fort Hood to the Persian Gulf region just like they did in 1991 -- Carol.

LIN: All right. Thank you very much. Dana Bash reporting live from Crawford, Texas. And CNN plans live coverage of President Bush's remarks to the soldiers at Fort Hood. They are scheduled for 11:55 Eastern.
