LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Now to the crisis in the Middle East.
Israel has struck back after the most serious attack on the country in six months. Just hours after suicide bombers in Tel Aviv killed 22 people and injured 100 others, the Israeli military launched an offensive in Gaza and the West Bank, using both missiles and man power.

The Israeli response is also triggering debate in world capitals. Let's go to one of them right now, Jerusalem.

CNN's Mike Hanna standing by there. He's following this developing story for us this morning.

Hello, Mike.

MIKE HANNA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Leon.

Nearly 24 hours after that suicide bomb attack, or pair of suicide bomb attacks in Tel Aviv, the sad task still continues of identifying the many bodies. Medical authorities announced that so far 18 bodies have been identified. Of these, 12 are Israelis and another six are foreign nationals from a number of countries, including Romania, Ghana and Bulgaria.

So once again, Israel's staggering from the effect of a terror attack in one of its cities.

The Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, visited the wounded in a Tel Aviv hospital in the course of the day. This just hours after he met with senior members of his government to decide what steps to take in the wake of the Tel Aviv attack.

And a number of steps have been decided on, and Israel had outlawed a meeting of her Palestinian central committee that was due to take place in Ramallah later this week. In addition, it said that a Palestinian delegation would not be allowed to travel to a planned conference that was due to take place in London later on in the month.

Among other missives, Israeli authorities are going to close three Palestinian universities that Israel says were being used as a base to plan terror attacks against Israeli civilians.

So a ratcheting up of the conflict in the region, and Israeli forces continuing their crack-down in Palestinian territories with more than 20 Palestinians having been arrested in recent hours, Leon.

HARRIS: Mike Hanna, reporting live for us from Jerusalem. Thanks, Mike. We'll see you in just a bit.
